OT-Computer help

I use my computer to access Tractor info so will ask this question here.

Get 20-30 Spam emails every day. Most just ads but a few may carry a virus so don't open any of them. Anything I can do, short of changing email address ? Some say I can block each individual email address as it comes in so new ones will be blocked. Sort of a computer "do not call list". I would do that but have no clue how.

Thanks for any help in advance. Always amazed at the knowledge all you folks have on here no matter what the subject !

Thanks again, Bill

On my system I hit spam instead of delete. The system then recognizes them when they try again and sends them to the spam file. Usually they are al coming from the same 1 or 2 sources.

It depends on which email you use, but usually marking it as "junk" and it will go to the junk email folder. After about a week the rules should automatically get updated. If you just delete the email there is nothing for the email server to update the rules.

Also if some of the "spam" is from legitimate retails you have done business with, sending you weekly or daily sales flyers, there should be an "unsubscribe" link at the bottom of the emails.

My understanding is you can't get a virus just from opening an email. Is that true?

The danger is in clicking on a link, which is more dangerous than copy and paste. Is that true?

Just asking, I know little about computers, trying to learn!

I had a problem with my mouse a couple months ago. Just a single click would actually double click. So, when I went to high lite an e-mail to throw in blocked section, it would open it up. Well anyway, I think I opened a few not so good ones before I figured out what was going on. New mouse took care of the problem but then my Norton security keeps popping up and blocking all kind of junk. Every time Norton kicks in my computer comes to a slow crawl. As I also have Malware-adaware protection, my computer man told me to disable Norton. He says it is no good anyway. So, not wanting to completely throw Norton out as it cost money and next computer whiz may have a different opinion, I reset it each time I boot up so that it is off until next reboot. So far that has worked ok and things are moving along normal. It is almost like asking what oil is the correct one to use in your tractor when you ask a computer repairman what virus protection is the right one. Frustrating

I have email through CenturyTel and I can go into their webmail in Internet Explorer an set the spam settings. I can actually set it to only receive the email that I want. Maybe ATT.net has the same feature. If it doesn't there is not much you can do about spam.
