I've been thinking of selling my 1066 with 3800 org hrs and upgrading to a 1086 I don't really use it much but to bale hay and blow snow but I'm thinking the 86 cab would be better? Also I've had the tractor on Craigslist for 14000 with no luck is this a good price? I live in northern mn I'm not really sure how to go about a better selling method this is big farm country and the local dealers aren't looking to take older tractors some thoughts or help would be appreciated thanks

Well your way over the local market here in North-eastern Iowa. I was at a sale to day with a IH 1086 6000 hours, fresh engine overhaul, new TA and great cab and working AC. I was the top bid of $7500. The owner did not sell as he wanted $10,500.

Your 1066 with that TERRIBLE cab, even with only 3800 hours, will be hard to sell for $8500-9000, in today's market. I am not running your tractor down but the market for older tractors is taking a hit right now with the IH ones getting it worse than the JD ones in my area.

A real clean JD 4430 will bring $12-15 if real sharp. Your IH 1066 would bring more here without the cab. The top price I have seen in the last six months is $8500 on a IH 1066. It had NEW radial tires that where worth $4000, Michelin 20.8 x 38.

A 1086 is worth very little more than a 1066 of similar condition. You know your tractor and it would be hard to find a 1086 with less than 4,000 hours.

Even with some of the shortcomings of an 86 cab it is still much better than factory IH cabs that were on 66 series.3800 hours is low but the market is just not much over $10K on either tractors.Craigs list,YT photo ads,Red Power magazine, consignment sales all work just that it is a buyers market especially until the depreciation tax is reinstated.

We had both 66 and 86 series tractors. The 86
series cab will have more insulation and will be a
little smaller. That is the only improvement. 66
series tractors ride better, run better, are more
easy to work on, shift better. If your old ten only
has 3800 hrs invest a few hundred dollars and fix
the cab back up, seriously.

I looked at a lot of IH tractors of that size and era before I bought the 1586. First, you are asking too much money. Not gonna argue the point. It is just too much. Second...I don't see the reason for dumping a good low hour tractor with most of the bugs worked out of it for another tractor with unknown issues. Third, doesn't the 66 cab have the bottom window behind the seat that allows you to see the draw bar? If so, you are going to miss that feature a lot if you do a lot of hooking on the rear. Must be interesting moving snow with that.

1066 & 1086 both good tractors. I've got a
1086 with 14,000 hours and still runs like
a top. I wouldn't upgrade though because
there is little difference in the two and
you pretty much start over on the repairs
when you buy another machine. If you are
looking for a comfort upgrade go for an 88
series as they are coming down in price
too because of their age.

If that is original hours, you have a nice tractor there, you will
not be upgrading trying to find a. 1086 as there are few low
hour ones left. You are moving sideways, and will be buying a
tractor with more problems than yours. The 1086 is not looked
at so favorably around here, there are very many in use but
they are considered cheap utility models any more, $9000
units.

Your 1066 will be about the same money.

Thanks for all the input I'm from down south and I've never even seen a 66 series tractor with a cab until I moved up north if I didn't have to use it in the winter I would just toss it.. It gets hot in summer cold in winter even though I replaced the weather striping it still leaks and it's loud yes the cab does have the window behind but u break ur neck looking out that one .. When I was a kid we had 3 1466 and a 1566 all open station that we farmed with I loved them the glowing stacks at night and the horse power they had was just unreal but we planted and sprayed with a 1086 with a cab and it seemed like a caddy compared to the others ... We bought a 5488 a few years later which is still my personal fav of IH and I'd love to own one of my own but a decent one is still out of my price range later as I got older we moved to the magnum series until my family retired from farming I had a lot of great memories of those old tractors guess is why I'm partial to them but comfort wasn't really in the design . I see people asking 15-17 thousand for 10 series with three time the hours as mine maybe they aren't selling anything though also I've considered trading for a 44 series deere just can't bring myself to do it .. I only have 4000$ in the tractor I got it from a old farmer who stopped using it in the late 80s cause it only ran a auger with it and the batteries died over winter and he didn't want to spend the money to replace them ..28 years it sat so with new batt new filters and some new diesel it started instantly only have done some minor seal replacement since .. So maybe I'll keep it for a while longer hopefully the value will increase more :D thanks for all the comments

I always thought the 66 series was the beginning of the end of IH. That cab was basically an afterthought. Just a little better than a home made cab or the old Hiniker cab.

Not running your tractor down, but I had a 706 German diesel and a 766 diesel. Both bought new. When it came time to convert to hobby farm status, guess which one I kept?
