Do you remember where you were?

I have heard many folks talk about where they were and what they were doing when life changing events occured in the USA, such as:

1. Where were you what were you doing when Kennedy was shot?

2. Where/doing.... the Challenger blew up?

3. Where/doing.... the Columbia blew up on reentry?

4. Where/doing.... the 9/11 attacks occurred.

5. Where/doing.... we invaded Iraq on 1-17-91 (it might have been the 16th I do not remember) Watching missles and bombs go down stove pipes on national news was very hi-tech and cool.

I was not born when Kennedy was hit, I was in the 11th grade when the Challenger blew up coming back from lunch-I heard it on the radio and thought it was a sick joke then I got into class and the principal went on the PA system and announced it. I was driving to the hardware store in 2003 when the Columbia blew up first thought it was a terrorist attack or something. I was at work when the 9/11 attacks happened, watching the world trade center towers fall was very shocking. I was in a college class when we started bombing Iraq in 91.

Do you remember?

Do you remember?

3rd grade at school for Kennedy. Found out on the bus on the way home. They told the older kids who ask if anyone wanted to still be the president.

Lunch time, Baumholder Germany for Challenger. We were doing an ammo download (during the Cold War we had a basic combat load of ammo on the tanks at all times except gunnery). We had to do a monthly download, inventory and reload. At the barracks at lunch time it was on Armed Forces network.

Driving to Willmar MN for classes 9/11.

2nd ACR for the bombing of Iraq.

At home when the Colombia crashed.

When the Challenger Blew up. January 28, 1986 driving from Key West to Palm Beach. We were on the Seven Mile Bridge and I said to my wife "thats an odd vapor trail". I didn't realize what it was until we got to my sister's in Palm Beach. A terrible to thing to happen but I will never forget it.

Oh Yeah I remember.
*I was in college classes when Kennedy was shot.
*Was working when Challenger blew up.
*Again was working when Columbia came apart on reentry
*I had retired in July 2011 and was in a meeting with old employees when a individual ran saying "the Pentagon was burning" and a plane had hit it. I turned to a Commander that had worked for and said "You better get back bosses are going to need you" He looked at me 1/2 second grabbed his cover left for the office.
*When we went after Iraq the first time I was in a meeting with an retired tanker
The second time I was sitting with the customer I was providing support to.

Yes I remember.
I remember went we were going after Saddam I turned to a 2 star and said "I hope they're smart enough to not catch him to quick" His response, after a slight hesitation, was "Oh take out the lower guys first" We didn't do it.

1. Kennedy -- I wasn't alive yet.

2. Challenger -- I was only 3 yrs old

3. Columbia -- in my dorm room at college.

4. 9/11/01 -- senior in HS - on the bus to class field trip. A buddy and I had both just turned 18 and we wondered if we would be drafted.

5. Iraq 1-17-91 -- 8 years old, at home, watched on TV. Our kitchen lightbulb was out, so we ate dinner in the living room, watching the TV. My parents kept telling us that this was a very serious thing happening.

Kennedy: Study Hall in H.S.; I had just come back from the bathroom
Challenger: At work at the local Social Security Office
Columbia: Breakfast at the Other Place tavern and restaurant
9/11: Same as Challenger
Iraq Invasion: I don't remember what I was doing

East playground of the elementary school when Kennedy was shot.

Challenger,I was standing in the doorway of the barn running the gutter cleaner listening to the launch on the radio. I stood there for about two solid hours listening.

Columbia,I don't remember where I was or what I was doing.

9-11,I had just gotten done milking, had a guy here waiting for me to get done so I could show him what to do. He was supposed to clean some fence rows for me. Another guy was here working on the air conditioner of the 4040. He had the door to his van open with the radio on. The second plane hadn't hit yet when I went out to see how it was going on the AC. He asked what I thought about the plane hitting the Trade Center. Told him I didn't know anything about it. The wife went in and turned the TV on. We went on business as usual, but on edge for darned sure.

Gulf war 1,sitting in front of the TV I guess.

Kennedy - was in grade school. Was in the cafeteria. I had just gotten my lunch. Principle came on the loudspeaker and made the announcement. You could have heard a pin drop.

Challenger - don't remember
Columbia - was on the back porch. Heard the explosion.

9/11 - at work. One of the consultants came in and said her husband had called her and said something was happening in NY.

I was on the way to the dentist in Cresco, IA having a day off from school when we saw flags at half staff....FDR had died.

I was teaching beginning drafting at New Hartford, IA high school when the Supt. came on the PA saying Kennedy was shot.

I was supervising my design of a John Deere Cab frame in the weld lab, Waterloo, Ia when the Challenger blew up.

Don't recall the Columbia disaster date.

Was designing seed handling conveyor equip in Cedar Falls, IA and was amazed how all orders suddenly stopped during the first Gulf War.

Was quoting and managing thermo form plastic jobs in Oelwein, IA when I saw the 9-11 on break room TV.

The one I remember most was Kennedy. I was in sixth grade, our classroom was at the end of the school building. The school didn't have a PA system at that time. The classroom door was open and we could hear the secretary's footsteps as she walked down the tiled hallway and stopped at every room to say something to the teacher. It had to be something big because she had never gone room to room like that before.

You could hear the explosion of the Columbia? It must have been right over your head, 100 miles up or whatever it was.

Kennedy. I was at work. Don't remember much more
Iraq. I was at work again on the second shift.
9-11 heading out to jury duty, by the time I got there the second tower had fallen. Jury duty was cancelled for that day. Stan

To young for Kenedy.

Challenger, home sick from school watching the launch.

'91 Iraq mom was taking me to basketball practice.

9/11 driving back from my morning class. Really thought they had found that missing girl that had been messing with that senator. Sat in the house the rest of the day watching the coverage.
Columbia I was feeding hay and had the radio on in the cab.

1. Kennedy: Wasn't around but I have watched a lot of interesting documentaries on Netflix.
2. Challenger: I was in the womb.
3. Columbia: I was a Junior in high school. I was prepping food for the day at my first job as a cook at Buffalo Wild Wings. It was on the (many) tv's in the bar area the rest of the day.
4. 9/11 Attacks. I'll never forget this one. I had just gotten into my second hour class my sophomore year of high school (Metal Shop), where the instructor (Maj. Gen. Jon Trost of the MN National Guard) was giving daily instructions to the class. My assistant principal walked in, walkie talkie in hand, and whispered something to my instructor. My instructors face went blank, he paused while looking around. He then said, "There is something you kids need to know about. The United States has been attacked." He motioned us to go to work on our projects, didn't turn on the television, but spent most of the next hour on his phone in his office. I have no idea what his conversation was about, or who it was to 'til this day, I can't even fathom. The rest of the day, we watched television coverage in all of our classes. My Marketing teacher was a wreck because he had many close friends working in the WTC. I remember being frightened, confused, angry, and awestruck as I walked out of the school that day and looked up into the sky. There was an eerie silence and clearing. No jet streaks. No planes. Just silence.
5. Iraq invasion of 1991: I was in kindergarten. Not sure what I was doing.. Probably working on eating play-doh or gluing my hands to the table. (I was a productive child).

1. Wasn't born yet.
2. High school transportation office, watching it TV
3. Watching it on TV.
4. At work.
5. In the hospital undergoing tests for my arthritis. Didn't know anything about it for a couple of days.

JFK First grade.Had just came back from lunch.

Challenger Was on my first day off of a 4 day turn-around.Gettin my boat ready for crappie season.

Columbia If my memory serves me that was on Saturday morning.

9/11 Sodding a yard in Bethalto il.

#1 In first grade. All the teachers were crying and we could not figure out why.

#2 In Des Moines at the State Pork Producers Meeting in Feb if I remember right.

#3 Don't remember that one unless I am have it mixed with #2. Which one had the school teacher on it?

#4 Building 4 seasons room on moms house when I heard it on the radio. Quit and went in and watched with mom as the second jet hit. Never went back to building. I was glued to the TV

#5 At home. Amazing how they could steer those bombs.

I don't remember very much about the Kennedy assignation, I was six at the time. An employee came back from lunch and told me the Challenger blew up. The Columbia blew up over my property. There was such a boom I thought a neighbors propane tank exploded so I drove all around my area trying to find out if someone needed help. On 9/11 my wife called me from work and told me the World Trade Center was on fire. I thought she meant it was the on in Dallas so I turned on the TV and found out it was NY. I was watching when the second plane hit. I remember watching on TV when Desert Storm began.

We were in the house when the Columbia disintegrated. Just like a sonic boom but more forceful.

9-11, I was asleep on the couch in a crash pad when my wife called and woke me. I was two months into my airline career. Yeah, good timing.

I was writing a calculus test when JFK was assassinated. The blockheaded instructor made us finish the exam. Everybody failed it. He later came to his senses and threw out the results.

#1 Running wiring in folks new house. #2 My business rep had just bought me and the wife lunch. #3 Don't remember. #4 Was running the business because the wife was on vacation with her sister. Seen a plane make a U turn and didn't know why.

1) Not yet born, nor a gleam in Dads eye yet...

2) I was a senior in high school

3) I was at work at Adkins Truck Equipment

4) I was out of town working, and setting at the
counter at a welding supply house in Dunn, NC

5) Sitting aboard the USS America (CV-66) in the
Red Sea, supporting our planes that were
dropping some of those bombs you are talking
about.

Kennedy- Eglin AFB, Fl, heard about it when we came in to the shop at lunchtime.
With both SAC B-52 bomber wing & TAC F-106 fighters based there, things were a bit tense for a while.

Chalenger- Picking up a load of cheese at a cold storage warehouse, watching the launch on TV in office. Said "it's not supposed to do that" when I saw the first wisp of strange smoke.

9-11 Truck stop at Smithton PA, headed to Ardmore Ok. While paying for my breakfast noticed everyone glued to tv, saw the second plane hit.

Others I don't remember where I was.

Willie

#1. In the classroom in sixth grade

#2 Working in the shop heard it on the radio

#3. I can't recall where I was at that time

#4. Just came in the door after morning chores, saw a plane crash into a skyscraper on TV and thought it was a movie preview on the morning show.

Kennedy-----High school science class

Challenger----Teaching an anatomy college course

Columbia------Visiting wifes uncle at a nursing home

Iraqi 1991----Attending National Ruritan convention

9-11----------College Provost trying to keep things calm

jfk seven years before me, challenger, senior year working on an a.p. history project in the library, coach Wallace had the launch on "off duty marine" never forget the stunned silence. Columbia I had just got off the tractor and was going to the milk barn and stopped as my aunt said the shuttle came apart. 9/11 I was loading wheat in the buggy for a fellow when he announced that a plane flew into the trade center. The war I was in the shop putting on an injector pump and the local radio station interrupted to tell we were at war.

When Pres. shot:At an USAF base in France.Just back into the barracks after evening chow.
Challenger:Watching it live on TV(worked nights at the time)
Columbia:At home
9/11:On the road
Start of Gulf War One: Just back home from work
And an add on.First moon landing:The company I worked for designed and built the L.M.We all stopped work, gathered around the radio and listened as touch down took place. Many lit up faces in the hangars that evening.

No for 2,3, and 5. When Kennedy was shot I was a young engineer putting strain gauges on a large steel BOF furnace. When 911 news came I was retired and out cutting brush. I also remember when news of Pearl Harbor hit.......family was visiting Grandparents. That's a looooong time ago.

Kennedy--waiting for the start of journalism class in college.

Challenger--at work.

Columbia--at daughter's soccer game. Might have seen some streaks if I'd known to look up. We were in the edge of the debris field. Friend of mine found a chunk of raw meat in his backyard. He called it in, some guys in a black SUV picked it up, he never heard another word about it.

9/11--at a friend's house.

Iraq--don't remember the opening shots, but when the B-52s came home from the initial bomb run I was on top of a parking garage with a crowd of other folks watching them make their approach to Barksdale AFB. They made the entire run to Baghdad and back without ever touching down until they got home.

I remember them all. Where I was just does not seem very important considering the gravity of those situations. What is important is that we continue to remember, in times of stress, to keep our one great country and it's ideals ahead of our own personal political beliefs and ambitions.

Several of us had gone to see friends in Bellingham Washington. We went and spent several days in Canada. We were eating lunch in a diner when we heard that the Iraq war had started. We were very worried about getting back across the border. It wasn't a problem, as it turns out. All others are burned in my memory but Kennedy. I wasn't around for that one.

I was in boot camp in San Diego when JFK was assassinated. When Challenger was lost I was watching it on TV. I knew it had exploded. When Columbia was lost I was at home in SE AZ. When we invaded Iraq I was working in the North Shore tunnel in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. When the Twin Towers were destroyed I was working underground at the Stillwater Mine at Nye Montana.

When Kennedy was shot I was sitting in first grade desk when one of the nuns walked in and told us. The Challenger accident I was getting a haircut. When Columbia broke apart, over Texas, I had just departed Addison airport, Dallas area, for Monterey Mexico. I was 15 minutes into the flight when it was happening. If we had known to look to our left and behind we would have witnessed it fairly close at 40,000ft. Didn't find out until we landed to pick up the passengers. Iraq I was at a bar in Santa Fe NM ,drinking tequila.

I was in 3rd grade in 1963. I remember all the teachers being called out and returning with tears in their eyes. We were loaded on school buses and seems like we spent the next week in front of the tv.
The shuttle accidents just did not make that kind of an impression on me.
9/11 I was on vacation and did not even know about it until the next day. The biggest impression that made on me was the silence in the sky with 0 plane noise.
Desert Storm was no surprise or shock. I was working at an Army depot and we had spent an entire year shipping material hand over fist in support of Desert Shield.

1963-JFK was my CIC, I was in USAF stationed on Cape Cod, near his summer home. He landed at our base most weekends. I was off duty and in downtown Boston when the news broke. I saw the whole city shut down and cry.
Ckain, Mi.

1) I think my dad was 4
2) 86, wasn't it? Just before my 5th birthday
3)US24 westbound, near Grand Rapids, Ohio
4)working in a warehouse just off I-75, just south of I70, Dayton, Ohio. Our lead came back and said a plane had hit the first tower, and they thought a smaller plane had hit the second, trying to get pictures. Someone had a small TV turned on up by the docks. We were worried the missing plane could have been headed for Wright-Patterson.
The next day I was leaning my head back against the wall at the chiropractor's office when a jet went over supersonic. I swear that wall moved 6 inches.
5)fourth grade

My junior year English teacher told us where she was in the building when they announced Kennedy had been shot. The football coach sat down crying. She didn't realize how long it had been til she asked a class one day where they were, and they looked at her funny, they hadn't been born yet.
