I copied and pasted a question I asked awhile back. Owner had the ford dealer look at it and after replacing the valve seats and one valve the tractor starts like new. Bill

Hard starting Ford 1700
Stable I do some work for has a Ford 1700 loader tractor with around 800 hours on it. Dash indicator light for glow plug comes on when activated. Problem is it take minutes of cranking to get the tractor started. Was in the 60's today so the block heater wasn't on. New 1000 amp battery can only last so long. (new 2 gauge cables too ) Engine is definitely getting fuel when cranking as evident from the smoke coming out of the exhaust when cranking. Last two times it was started, ended up putting a set of jumper cables from my truck on it to keep it cranking long and fast enough to finally start. Know its getting close to starting when a small flame comes out of the stack, eventually it catches and the rpms come up above cranking speed and its good to go unless you stall it or you shut it off. Runs fine otherwise. Bill

Flames coming out the exhaust right before it finally decides to start sounds like it might be a timing issue, like the injectors are firing just a hair too late to make it start easy, but not far enough out of time to keep it running once it does start.

It won't start up again when it is hot - run it a while, shut it off, and try to start it within a minute?
That would be a puzzle, glow plugs are the obvious thing to check, but would not be needed to restart when it is hot?

thanks to all for responding. Will check these things out.

Bad valve and seats would make it hard to start. A diesel engine needs compression to fire the fuel. So without compression it won't start.

Hey guys I?m a few years behind, but I need a little assistance with my ford 1700 2cyl as well.
The issues are exactly as stated above, I have ran down two batteries trying to get it to fire over.

10 months ago, I was asked to get this little tractor running again, was told it ran when it was parked.
So with a hot battery( and ) my ford Ranger?s boost , it cranked up, after some new fuel and bleeding the system of course.
It cranked twice, but after its first test run in possibly years, it got super hard to crank on the third time, and after that , it just bellows out smoke, and backfires.
I removed the front cover to inspect the timing gears ⚙️ all was fine.
I have set the valve lash 3 times, once on the fourth time it cranked, and then again today, it is still the same.
New oil, New fuel, cleaned and visually inspected the? glowing ? plugs. They work!
Hmmm ? I?m stuck, tomorrow I?m going to do a compression test, any help would be greatly appreciated.

What is puzzling,is that it was running and strong it seemed, but got worse with every startup after that??
