OT: South Dakota Trip

I leave Tuesday with the family heading from Michigan to South Dakota. We usually take 90 across Wisconsin and Minnesota, although I am thinking about taking 80 across Iowa to 29. Anyone know what the snow levels are like in northern Iowa or southern Minnesota? Thinking the roads might be better in Iowa.

Snows pretty well gone here in SE SD by Sioux Falls. We usually take I-380 from Iowa City to Waterloo and then up on I-35 to I-90 by Albert Lee, MN. Pretty good route and not as many toll's to pay going through Chicago. 50 miles closer than the I-80 route.

Local forcast.

I'm sitting in a truck stop in Sioux Falls SD. Came up 29 from Houston. Roads are clear. 40's and rainy today. Supposed to get into 20's tonight. Hopefully it won't ice up. Should be clear by Tuesday if it does get icy.

Just got off the phone with a gentleman in central Mn. Said most of his snow is gone as is the snow in Iowa. Should be good travel weather.

Thanks for all the replies, I know it's always sketchy this time of year, have been in some bad ice storms rolling through Wisconsin so thought I would try something different.

Just to be sure, I-35 doesn't go to Waterloo. You are most likely thinking of US 218 and US 18. They are excellent roads from Waterloo to I-35.

Your right. Driven it so many times I don't look at a map anymore, just turn here or there.

Or you could take 90 from Chicago to Rockford, bypass 20 to Freeport then 2 lane 20 to Galena and 4 lane to Dubuque and waterloo, nice country if it isn't snowing.

Where are you going in South Dakota? My mom was from Lake Norden west of Watertown. I would love to get out there some fall and do some pheasant hunting.

How strange. A cousin and his family had a farm right next to Lake Norden. I was there a couple of times when I was little. Always wanted to go back and see the place after I grew up but never got to.

Just ran I80 to Pa from NE. Very light snow on the ground and the highway was okay. We ran along at 75 mph no problems.

Heading to Letcher, about half-hour northwest of Micthell. Have been pheasant hunting there for 15 years. Can't wait to get back.

I've been there a few times, I thought it was all sent over to
China a couple of years ago? Maybe I can swing by again this
week and see what's going on.

You better recheck the roads before you leave tomorrow just mite need to wait another day check road reports some are bad rite now at 6pm.

Thanks Gene, we're watching the storm go through now. We'll have to see how things shake out by the am, supposed to be icy around here.
