about deer hunting

Lots of talk about deer hunting,,I Dont hunt, but do have friends that hunt,It may not be fair to say opinions on hunters as a group. I was thinking of an example,,,I Go to auction sales ,and have seen a tractor run perfect before the sale, then have seen it not start ,keys broken off or missing, parts missing etc,..Who ever would do that, would probably be a bad hunter too,and probably throws trash out the window on the way home too,There are lots of farmers at these auctions, would it be fair to say farmers do these things?no,it doesnt matter who did it,whoever did it cant be labeld as a hunter, farmer etc,,,just labelsd as a p.o,s, I am not sure I am typing what I am thinking, but in any group of people there are some that are not good and you cannot lump all people in one group when giving an opinion?

Larry, I have had business dealing with the Chief of a local Indian tribe. He stated it better than anyone else can. I quote "There are good people in all races, and there bad people in all races". You should not judge all people by the stupidity of some.

Larry your observation is a valid one.

I chose to not invite the group that has caused me problems on my property. Is this fair to the "good" hunters??? Not really but I can't police them so I deny the entire group.

How would you feel if you go up to your place in PA and find that pond you have stocked with fish has been fished out by uninvited fishermen??? You would not be forgiving towards anyone wanting to fish there in the future.

The real fact is that people are less considerate of others than they were in years past.

I see your point too. Believe it or not,we let 1 good neighbor hunt our little piece of woods,he keeps an eye on everything, from stray hunters ,fisherman ,quad riders,,,,,campers,,,hikers ,,,etc. Since we dont live there ,and are more than an hr away, the one good hunter that hunts our property has chased away many people ,It has worked well for us.Its just an example, and results may vary,,,but it did work well for us,,,,and as always,,,your a great man J.D.!

There are bad apples in every crowd. I have just about seen it all when it comes to hunters. Some will ask permission and be the nicest guys you could ever run across. Others will just go without asking and tear up your property and even steal stuff. I hate to be judgmental towards people, but I have had to pretty much resort to that. I look out for people that are dis-respectfull or inconciderate and do not let them on my property. They are the ones that you will have trouble with.

When you think about it Larry - there were a hundred good people at the hypothetical sale that you mentioned. No one noticed them, but the one scoundrel that jimmied the tractor so it wouldn't start was noticed by all. That's how it is with everything. Gun ownership - race issues - politics - religion - hunters - all of these groups are stocked with good people, but the knuckleheads make the headlines. Good news does not sell. We should never make excuses for someone else's bad behavior.

Larry, like you, I've been reading these conversations, and thinking about my experience. Of the hunters (legal and illegal) I have dealt with on my property over the years, just one has respected my property like I do. He was the only one who walked the perimeter with me to post it. I think he even bought the supplies. When an idiot neighbor tore down the little stand my friend had built near the property line, my friend came and told me about it, and decided to leave for good, as he didn't want to cause any issue between the neighbor and me. He was a real gentleman. And he was a real man. Alaska wilderness survivor. He could have folded the idiot neighbor into a pretzel if he had a mind to. I have a family hunting here now. They are a nice bunch- mom and pop, their teenagers, and grandparents too. Since the last guy left ruts in my grass/sod laneway, I told them no driving to the woods unless it's a flotation type vehicle- ATV/UTV. They have some little golf cart type thing they have been running in exactly the same track so much that I'm seeing mud.
For the privilege of being on my property I expect it to be left as good or better than it was found.
I could write a small book on the subject. I haven't mentioned the trespassers, who make my blood boil. I don't know where all the wonderful hunters are, but they sure aren't here. In my case it's a tiny minority.

Larry, IMHO, there are HUNTERS (A GOOD bunch of folks) and there are TRESPASSERS (typically drunk), and for sure inconsiderate and lawless.

It is an INSULT to real hunters to group them in with the rest of the crew!

Some differences in farm auctions and hunting
1)Farm auctions draw a better class group of people
than the population at large, most farm folks understand respecting other's property and these days they are an older crowd.2)Auctions usually have some type of security people around whether you realize it or not and you won't unless you do something wrong.3)Hunting,hiking etc when people are basically alone puts them in a situation to do things sight unseen they wouldn't do in front of a crowd.I've had a few people come to my farm to hunt that I've known for awhile that I found out by they way they acted here that they had bad character flaws I'd never seen before. But yea there are many really good people that hunt that respect the landowners and their property.Just like everything else you have to separate the chaff from the grain but after awhile it gets to be a pain which is why there are many farms closed to hunting.

I think something goes off in the brain. Out in the wilderness, whatever you want to define as that, seems the worst part of the brain gets triggered in some people. Being "free" to do as they wish, with control over life and death at their fingertips is more than some can handle.

Fiction senario. You are out in the Colorado Rockies deer hunting. Over on the next ridge is an orange colored vested person walking the slope. You have your scoped -06 across your lap. You could just as well take a shot at the guy as not, your decision, you're in control....you have the POWER over life and death; your decision and yours alone.

Some can handle that, some go off the wacko end and that is one reason why I don't hunt.

THe worst hunter in our area had appeared on several TV shows and has his own hunting videos out. More than one of his neighbors has warned him to quit guiding paying hunters onto his neighbor's property.
