Hi Looks like a nice tractor, Got a few of those round us. one guys got 11000 hours on a 5488 it comes in the shop here the odd time. its only had routine age related stuff done and tires.

Hope it's nothing major wrong, as if it is you might have tears in your eyes like you got hoofed someplace sensitive , when you get the bill.
Good luck with her.
Regards Robert

Yep It will but at least you got a good tractor in the end.
our local parts man told my buddy what ever you do, don't trade anything first generation type magnum off on newer fancy series ones. they are plain junk and if they had to make money on first gen and any like yours, they'd be out of business, due to lack of work!. I was there when he said it so know it's true.
Regards Robert

He doesn't need to- he just gonna sit in there and
hold his foot on the brakes until they get it to the
shop......

That's what I'm doing; only it's thru the IH dealer 'bout 50 miles away. They'll haul anything under 75 mile radius for free.

I've got a super AGCO dealer here locally, but this job is pretty involved and I really don't think he'd be keen on it.

If the brakes are like the 86 series it's not all that bad of a job. I did my 1086 myself years ago. A year ago when it need them done again I, well, I got lazy and took it to town. I'm not as agile as I used to be. Or ambitious, for that matter.

Not necessary to chain a tractor. I know someone
who went from Mn.to one of the Dakotas to pickup an
IH, I think an 806 or 1206. He only took one chsin
with. When he got there the cab was off the tractor
so he used the chain to chain the cab on. He did
loose the cab on the way home, but not the tractor.
Said he didn't need to chain it since it had park.

What happened to the brakes... did a PO abuse them? How many hours do brakes last on those red things?

I hope it is not like the 06,56,etc, that when the brake seals began to leak, the bearings on that shaft were going out and next, the bull gears.

The brakes are more like a 1586 tractor. They are inboard of the rear axle planetary drives. The rear axle housings have to be removed to service them.
