What are you watering Vic? Have you seen the electric dog dish? Also, since you already have an investment - have you ever used a Thermocube? Farm stores sell them - on at about 35 degrees and off at about 40. I've used one in my pump house for years. Seems like they're around $10. No need to unplug it. Be safe!

Be careful< I had a friend who had one of those flotation stock tank heaters, a cow pulled it out of the tank and it set his barn on fire and killed all of the cows.

Used a oil pan heater affixed to bottom of insulated stock tank. 150 watts,$35. Put on timer so not on full time. Works mostly OK till temps get into single digits then need on full time. Below 0 for too long and 1500 watt heated gets installed.

If that is one of those 100 watt electric heaters inside a thin glass tube? If it is, I would add a GFI (Ground Fault Interrupter?) to the circuit. I wouldn't want a valuable animal like a cow to break the glass with her nose or bump the board and get electrocuted.

I don't remember ever having to replace the one in my pump house. We've had the well since around 1989. I have to admit that I haven't checked it yet this year, and I'll do that this evening if it's cold enough. I have several new ones, still in the package - figured they'd fail often, but so far. . .

I am watering 4 horses. yes it is a glass tube. The 2X8 floats up and down keeping the glass submerged.

Nothing personal but when you own livestock you are obliged to provide a standard of care.
What you have set up in the photo is an accident waiting to happen, get rid of it.
