Blackout of 2003 question

The 2003 blackout that occurred in the midwest and northeast was in the summer time. Mid-August I think.

Here is my question: I heard that natural gas was out as well due to the pumping station(s) not having the power to put the NG in the lines. Is this true? A fella at where I work said his NG was out. chime in if you know the answer.

Thanks in advance.

I am pretty sure they use electric pumps yes. There is a pumping station just north of me on the highway. I would assume if they had a major outage they would bring in auxiliary power. Especially if it was cold weather.

There is a pumping station North of Terre Haute. Not sure if it's pan handle eastern or what? I was told they by a person who works there, they use a 1000 hp nat gas turbine to pump the gas. Not sure if they depend on electricity, but around here electricity goes out. I would think the gas company has plans for that.

The pumping stations I have been around use natural gas from their own pipeline to fuel their engines; turbine or piston. TDF

There are electric compression stations, but the bulk of them are on natural gas. It does take electric for the pumps and controls, but most have UPS for those backed up by a Diesel or NG generator.

does he have electric pilot lights? if you have no electric, the auto pilot lights will not light the gas, so the gas in a house won't work.

Lots of new stuff is all going over to the auto pilot lights fed by electricity.
