Good morning Guys.
For many years my wife and I watched the deer in our hay field.
200 yards from kitchen window We have counted as many 25 at any one time. But over the year or so we have noticed that in the number of deer has been get smaller and smaller.
I am thinking that because of the CWD chronic waste disease that we had here in southern and centurial Iowa last year if this could be the cause.
It was reported that on one of the rivers that is just north of me It is called the middle river the DNR found 26 dead dear on that river and many more were found around farm ponds and
A few lakes. We have seen a few small deer that were yearlings
And not enough meat on them to fill a coffee. So you Guys here in Iowa what is your thought on this.
ALSO; nothing has changed on what they can eat .
I have a 55 acres of corn to the north of me across the road and a 60a of beans north east 100 ac or corn east of me 35 ac, beans to the west and to the south a real large 100 ac, of corn, 4 ponds
And a creak so lack food supply is not the problem.
SO WHAT DO YOU THINK THE PROBLEM IS
MANY THANKS jr frye88

My deer herd went from about 100, to about 30.EHD last two years. Deer car collisions down 40% according to State Farm. I stopped all hunting last year and will do the same this year. One doe not killed could net you 9 deer by July 2016

Just read an article in the paper that said the deer herd in Mn is also way down, changed some hunting rules this year to try to bring it back, there's plenty around here.

Deer are more than plentiful. Just travel the back roads about one hour after dusk and you will see them. Hopefully, BEFORE you collide with one.

Bring a cattle hauler and you can have a trailer load. Here in Pa they are everywhere. Talked to a warden and he told me we aren't taking enough of them. He wouldn't give me an anytime kill license though. Too much posted property. Oh well after they strip the woods clear of browse, a lot of them will starve.

Here in WV we have some CWD. But if you find deer near water in the summer it is mostly what we call blue tongue. There is a scientific name for it but I cannot remember it. It is spread by a fly, generally dies out come fall and may never be seen again in an area as CWD can be found yr. round and stays in an area for yrs.

Can't agree with you. Deer are everywhere on my farm in south central Iowa. I see them every morning and every afternoon/evening. Sometimes in the middle of the day. I haven't seen the herds of 20 or more yet but maybe not cold enough for them to bunch up yet.

Bluetongue disease is a non-contagious, insect-borne, viral disease of ruminants, mainly sheep and less frequently cattle,[1] goats, buffalo, deer, dromedaries and antelope. It is caused by the Bluetongue virus (BTV). The virus is transmitted by the midge Culicoides imicola, Culicoides variipennis and other culicoids.

Had a bad wind storm 60 + per hour. Electrical line was a death sentence for the local Deere. Deere are thick like hair on a dog in this part of North Western Alberta Canada.

We live 15 miles from town. On any given day, somewhere along that 15 mile stretch, there will be at least one fresh road-kill, and usually 2 or 3.
