AC generator model 6td-3 6 kw i ph 1800 rpm 60 cy 115 230 v mfg Fairbanks Morse -- Generator output works except voltage can only be regulated varies with speed. The reostate located exterior does not function to control voltage. Any help is appreciated. Even a recomdation of good repair shop would help. Thanks Bill Wilson

(quoted from post at 16:11:16 11/09/14) AC generator model 6td-3 6 kw i ph 1800 rpm 60 cy 115 230 v mfg Fairbanks Morse -- Generator output works except voltage can only be regulated varies with speed. The reostate located exterior does not function to control voltage. Any help is appreciated. Even a recomdation of good repair shop would help. Thanks Bill Wilson

Disconnect the old regulation system. Go to eBay and purchase a 240V regulator for a brush type generator. Connect 240 to the two AC lines. Connect the brushes to the two DC lines. Crank her up and watch the voltage stay at 240V from no load to full load.

Thank you so much. Not to clear on the part of the
two dc lines. Presently two wires are connected to
the reostate. However there is no voltage on these
wires. Would not this indicate a brush problem
internally? May have to wait till old John T
returns to walk me through this while I bribe him
with coffee and food.

Brushes are supplied with DC onto the slip rings. The DC voltage and current are varied to the slip rings/rotor windings. The more current the more lines of magnetic flux and the stator AC voltage will increase .
The universal replacement regulator takes care of sensing the stator voltage, rectumfies stator AC to DC to supply the rotor. And controls the amount of DC to rotor so the stator output stays at 240V from no load to full load.
