Ford 861 powermaster

Didn't want to hijack the post below, I'm working on an 861 for a guy that has set for about 6 or 7 years, belonged to the fellows Dad, who was our neighbor, it was a good running and working tractor. Doing rear wheels and tubes, the tires were good, leaking fluid rotted the rims, the gas tank has 3 or 4 gallons of bright green stuff in it and it needs to be rewired, battery box rotted off etc, no paint just get it back dependable. Was talking to an old general mechanic and he thought the 861 and 961 both had the 172 engine, if that is correct what was the major difference in the two? I know this one was a powerful tractor, used to use it on the blower for silage and high moisture shelled corn, it did a good job. Another neighbor had a 961 and I drove that one quite a bit also back in the day and I couldn't tell much if any difference between the two.

As far as I know, both are the same. The 900 series is the rowcrop version of the 'utility' 800 series.

Deltared is correct.

The 861 is a WF utility tractor.

The 961 is a row crop version. The 961 was offered with either WF or NF and had final reduction gearboxes. It is heavier and a bit longer than the 861.

Both used the 172 engine rated at approximately 48 PTO HP.

600 series is the small engine, low. A modernized N.

700 series is rarer (around here anyhow) is the small engine, tall row crop typically narrow front.

800 series is the bigger engine, low.

900 series is the bigger engine, tall row crop typically narrow front.

They all share a lot of the frame and accessories and transmission options.

861 uses the same engine and transmission as the 961 but the 861 is a utility type tractor and the 961 a row crop and the 861 has a wide front and most likely the 961 a trike front

Thanks for the info, this 861 has 28 inch rear wheels and a wide front, the 961 the neighbor north of me had was a narrow front and I think 38 inch rear wheels, it's been a long time ago. Good old tractors.
