Scotts L 2048 mower ignition switch issue

I have a Scotts (John Deere) L 2048 mower. I started the mower and mowed and had to shut it off. Upon shutting it off the starter motor kept going, humming loudly, definitely running, but not spinning the motor. It did this for a long time until the battery died, which was weak upon starting it today. I was 1/4 mile from the barn along the road, so had to pull it back with the quad. Upon getting back to the barn, I put a jump starter pack to the battery, and immediately, with the key "off" the starter engaged and spun the engine. I'm thinking the ignition key switch is bad? Any thoughts?

Its either the ignition switch or the solenoid. But my money would be on the solenoid.

(Either the switch is feeding power to the solenoid when its not supposed to, like when the switch is in any other position than 'start', or more likely, the contacts in the solenoid are welded together.)

The contacts in solenoids are particularly bad about welding together when the battery is weak and the starter draws more amps than normal.
