Think I will put the combine away

Thinking I will unhitch the combine and park it in the shed for winter after waking up to this sight this morning. Only a couple of hours work left but it does not look like it will get done til next spring.

Where are you located? That would be a sight to wake up to! By the way, I"ve never seen a utility pole that goes through the roof overhang of a barn. What's the story with that?

Modern view shows S.E. Sask.

Randall,
The poles on the building and through the soffit were quite common here in Michigan when I was growing up on most outbuildings. Screw a big insulator to the top of it to anchor your overhead wires.

Now it seems most are going with the insulator anchored directly to the building or underground.

I would not unhook it just yet. It is only the first week in Nov. Most times a week after that first snow you will get 10 days nice weather. Snow will melt, ground will dry and your good to go.

In wet years many fields have to wait until after the ground freezes down several inches before they can support a combine or wagons. If the fields are not too muddy, less than six inches of snow won't make much difference. I wouldn't call it quits yet.

That's getting too close for comfort!
We had a bit or rain last night but no snow. I put my combine away a few days ago. Still have about 5 acres of wheat out but water's standing in it so no hope for this fall. The deer will have something to graze this winter, although the fusarium might give them a belly ache.

Yes, I forget my location is not visible on
classic view. That pole through the barn
overhang was for the overhead wires but they
have been underground since 92.
This snow is slowly melting but more rain is
forecast for tomorrow. We are saturated
already. Piling flax straw yesterday and I saw
water in the ruts that my combine left. Guess
it will be deeper today.
Jim, 4.5% fusarium on my first wheat field.
Still waiting on the vomitoxin test results to
see if it will make feed or not. What a crop.

Hard to say; the weather may warm up and be nice for enough days that you can finish yet. My uncle sometimes had to finish by dualling up the combine and running on the ice sometimes, but he got the windrows off that way.

Out here on the left coast it is just the opposite. Dry hot wilds. The fire depts. are on special watch during this dry weather. Stan

Rusty, I hope the weather breaks for you, but I may have bad news. Tonight's extended prediction for the middle to end of next week was a turn to much colder weather. Highs in the 40s and lows in the 20s may not be terrible for you, but for us it's like January in November.

That seems to always be the conundrum. Is it worth mobilizing for that last little bit. I always used to say, YEAH LETS GO!!! now not so much.
