how do I go from 4 wire Motorola alt with seperate voltage reg to a gm 1 wire alt thanks in advance

After mounting one wire alt run a wire from post on alt to the top post on starter solenoid. You could insert a volt meter in between alt & solenoid if you so desired.

es, he could insert a voltmeter in that wire but it won't charge. It would charge if he inserted an ammeter though.

Volt meters go to ground from hot (switched is best. Putting it in series will just not work at all they have very high resistance. An amp meter will be the only one placed in series. and that is a poor place to put it as it will never show discharge. It should go between all accessory and load and the battery (except the starter motor) Jim

Interesting, We have a 4020 with the Motrola. I need an isolation diode for it. Deere told me yesterday NLA. I have been thinking about changing it if I can not find one at some electrical service shop, but I want to stay 3 wire and I need a way to power the idiot light.

robably one out there somewhere. But if worse comes to worse & you insist, you could pick out one of these left most diodes & bolt it to a heat sink & wire it up. More than one way to skin the cat.

Those isolation diodes are common, cheap, and easy to get. American Motors also used the same ones on cars. NAPA sells them, as most other auto parts places do. They come in single diode units and dual diode units.

Dumb question: Why not use another Motorola unit or a 3 wire alternator?

I thought the main advantage of using a one wire alternator was the ability to use the simpler wiring on older machines at the cost of higher rpms are needed to excite the unit to start charging. A one wire alternator on a fairly modern tractor that already has a three or four wire harness sounds like a step backwards.
