Air compressor belt

I have an air compressor with a multigroove belt. it has begun to try to climb up out of the grooves on the compressor pulley. any one have any experience correcting this problem?

Something has probably come loose, like the compressor mount bolts, or the motor adjustment bolts, or the motor pulley has walked on the shaft. If the motor pulley is loose it may have wallowed the bore. If it has it will need to be replaced or it will never stay tight, could damage the motor shaft. Alignment and tightness are critical for those belts.

I use a straight edge, like a framing square, or known straight piece of metal. After checking the compressor mount bolts, lay the straight edge along the outside machined surface of the compressor flywheel. Measure the distance to the edge of the belt to the edge of the straight edge at the flywheel. Compare this measurement at the motor pulley. Adjust the motor pulley until the belt is parallel with the straight edge. Then put the straight edge on the motor pulley. Adjust the motor until the straight edge is parallel with the belt. You'll need to take several measurements and make fine adjustments to get it right.

If the belt has been run misaligned or loose, it may need to be replaced.
