Perkins Repowered tractors/ Perkins engine history

This is probably more for someone in the U K. Does anyone have a tractor that has been repowered with a Perkins engine? Perkins had a website that told about the histories of some of the engine models. Did anybody copy & save that article? Looking for information on the no dot, Dot 1, 2, 3 & 4 engines especially the 354 engines. Thanks in advance. J.

Late father-in-law ran Massey Fergusons. Had Perkins. Were strong engines, no major problems. Two of his still exist. I'm still running one in a MF 180. Been a good engine.

How come there were so many oliver 1800/1800A, parked because of the perkins, just curious what you know. thanks chris

1800s didn't have a Perkins. Those were Oliver/Waukesha engines. Only the 1850 diesels used a Perkins.

I guess I did not explain it well enough. I have seen IH models and English Fordsons with L-4 Perkins repowers. I am not looking for OE tractors with Perkins engines.

Wasn't there one Super 55 around with a Perkins? I think I remember seeing that in HPOC magazine. Was that experimental or something somebody did? I don't remember the whole story on that one. Do you remember who owns it?

Not tractors but here (Oz) 6-247's were being sold to re-engine Toyota Landcruisers before Toyota put out their diesel. And we got a few Ford F trucks with these engines as a local option.

Landcruisers in South Africa around 1988 also came with a local production Perkins - not sure which one.

I have seen photos of several Case/DB 1594 and 1690s done with 354s, 354T, and a 372. Not a simple task because of how the DB frame, engine, and clutch housing are designed. The 6 cylinder DB engine didn't live up to its designers expectations... If I could find a good 1594 with a blown engine I would probably do it myself.

I know of a few old Ford pickups with 354s around my area.

I briefly entertained repowering my C70 Chevy with a 540 or 640... but simply too many projects on the plate right now.

A good 354 is a beautiful thing to listen to.

Not repowered, but AC used the 236 and 248 in their 170 and 175 tractors. It didn't make any sense to me as they were producing their own four cylinder engine the whole time. They finally used that engine in the next series(6000) of tractors, just before AC died!

The AC 200 isn't in the same league as a 236 or 248 Perkins.

It was a 550. My employer was on the Oliver dealer council and he told the story several times that Oliver had looked at investing in Perkins.

I agree. I had a tractor with the 236. I had a tractor and a combine with the 433T, and a combine with the 433I. They were all good engines. But the AC engine out powered the Perkins by far. I don't know if Perkins ever produced a turbocharged version.

The Perkins is probably still out there running somewhere.

Only a couple 433s still around here in combines, I haven't seen a running 6000 AC in quite a while, and I am in a very heavy AC area.

My brother in Law has a Ferguson TE 20 that has been re-powered with a P3 which was quite a common conversion apparently. It is quite a tough little tractor actually but a little 'top heavy' to drive. Quite a few of these exist that have also had their original P.T.O shaft replaced with a 'modern' 1 3/8 " diameter shaft as the original shaft often broke due to the extra torque provided by the more powerful engine! I have also seen the odd Allis B and IH (W4?) that have have been fitted with a P3 and Standard Fordsons with L4 engines. I have a book showing an International Farmall M tractor with an L4 , however the photo is ( wrongly) captioned as a BMD!

O come on guys There is quite a few 6060,70 and 80
alive and well in my area. I have a 6060 that had a
intercooler put on it the day I bought it new. The
horsepower was set at 105. It has been there since
83. About 7 or 8 yrs ago diesel pump needed work
and a few yrs before needed a new imput
shaft(groove wore in it) and clutch fingers. Oh and
about 3 AC compressors. Only bad thing, needs a
little nudge to start if it is below 70.

Perkins did produce a Turbo version of The 236, it was used in The MF 698T tractor amongst other things. A pretty good engine apparently. As for The 'Naturally aspirated ' version of The 236 we had a Massey 168 with The 236 and an IH 674 with The IH 239 . Officially The IH was a higher hp tractor but it did not have the torque or lugging ability of the Perkins. Going up hills with both tractors pulling trailers loaded with grain or manure with the same size loads The IH would 'go down' quicker than The Massey. My neighbour had a 574 ( 4/239) and a 475 ( A rather odd ball European IH with a factory fitted Perkins 212, the same engine as a Massey 165 mk.2 ) Apparently the 475 'would pull the a*** off the 574'.
