If they could only talk

Amazing photos on that site. Appreciate you posting the link! A practiced eye tells me there is some stuff in there that would bring money if auctioned. Hope it is made available before it hits the dumpster. Shame to see old things scrapped. You cannot recreate them or the history attached to them. At the same time, you cannot keep everything.

The effort it took...securing materials and all the labor needed to build the ships, aircraft...is amazing to me..

Grandma worked at Hughes in california during the war...was involved in expedited orders for the mfg lines....aircraft i believe..wore skates to get here and there.

In wichita, there is effort to restore old ww2 aircraft ...Believe there are some old aircraft carriers and battleships which have been restored..but it is extremely expensive to both repair and maintain.

At the very end was a link to declassified photos and a video of Little Boy and Fatman that were very interesting too. Thank you for the links.

You know, every time we scrap our mothballed ships and guns and aircraft, something happens and we end up sitting there with our thumbs up...well, we look pretty stupid. Theoretically theres a "Ready Reserve" fleet, but IIRC they have a heck of a time manning them and getting them where they need them.

Just sayin'...

Good stuff. The first time I went to S.F. was 1964, in a '59 V.W. Beatle. I got lost on the N.E. corner of the 'Bay' and ended up driving all over the heck and back, got stopped 3 times by "Shore Patrol" (s), AND, saw row upon row up.................. row of 'Mothballed' Ships. Mind boggeling at the time (I was 17). Might be driving the results !! HPH

I wonder if the Chinese bought the scrap. We'll probably get it back one way or another. Seems we don't learn from past history.

I'm thinking the Yorktown air craft carrier is still on display at Charleston SC. And the battleship North Carolina is on display at Wilmington NC.

They served their purpose in their time, but they are too used and too obsolete to send our grandchildren out in them now. It's expensive to store and maintain them if they will never be used again.

The important ones can be made into museums if someone wants them and can raise enough money to fix them up. They can't all be saved unless someone is willing to pay for all of them.

I agree ss55, those are mostly too old. But what reserves do we really have? Speaking strictly of the Navy, you can go on line and see that we have a relatively small Navy at present as far as ship numbers go. Yes, they are very effective, but once the platform is sunk there's not a lot to replace it. It just seems as though we always make the wrong choice at the wrong time when we downsize.
