Sometimes it doesn't matter; those 2-cylinders would sometimes fire any old time they wanted to.

That's why the old Field Marshall was such a hit at the Temple, Texas show... a 50% reduction in the number of cylinders.

I was always amazed that JD farmers continued to buy those 2 piston gas drinkin' Johhnies on up into the sixties when much better engines such as Farmall, Oliver and A/C were available. Then the 4020 hit the scene in about '65 and JD was in power again.

The two cylinder diesels set fuel efficiency records that diesel tractors have struggled to meet let along exceed for the past 56 years.
As for gasoline fuel efficiency even in Nebraska test trim with the main jet opened to the max five turns for max power. The still the Deeres ran mid pack in in economy. If the main jet was dialed back to 1 to 2 turns. The two cylinder Deere gassers were as good as any other gasser out there.

Yeah, I always wondered about that- you couldn't see a little spinning ball governor, but I always suspected there was a hit and miss setup buried down in there somewhere.

Was hoping you would post on with those stats , B/D! If anyone wants to bash JD 2cyl they had better come up with a more valid reason than fuel economy. And unlike JD from new gen on up , the JD 2 cyl tractors were actually cheaper to buy than other brands , apples to apples . I once asked my Dad why my Grandpa , who would climb over the gate to make the hinges last longer , bought a NEw JD B in 1939 ? he said because it was the cheapest row crop tractor in that HP range. They actually came standard with a swinging drawbar. Optional on most others. But whatever, averyone has their opinion.
