What's up with Lawyers?

These lawyer advertisements are about to turn me off of TV forever. It seems the last few years that some of the lawyers commercials have gotten sleazier and sleazier. I mean, we have one here in Alabama that is named Mike Slocumb and he constantly advertises as "The Alabama Hammer!". Say the slogan with a gravely voice and emphasis on "Hammer" and you got it. He says he will get you "The Big Check!". Even has people on there touting the amount that he got them in a settlement. In my opinion this is the worst professionalism that I have ever witnessed. Not all are this bad, only about 2 out of 10 or so that advertise in this market are like that. Is it just me or has the lawyer profession gone nuts to let someone represent their profession in this manner. It would be (at least to me) like an MD advertising that he can cure "The Big C"(cancer). My opinion is this is skirting with false advertisement by causing someone to believe something that may or may not be true. Did something change the last 5 years or so to allow someone with the equivalent of a PhD to advertise like this? Sure seems like the dam broke at some point and all of a sudden this stuff went nutz! Sure wasn't this way some years back. Is it just me, maybe? Am I going nutz or something? Thank the Lord for the mute button...now if I could just find the OFF button!

My mute button gets used nearly a dozen time on any program, I watch. Some make a complete idiots
out of themselves. The trouble is they don't know
it.

We have lots of 'em too, one says "if you've been injured in an accident- ANY KIND of accident- call our lawyers group". Yeh, what about a stupid accident you did to yourself? Must be too many sharks and not enough victims in the water.

We have a whole family of them here in Michigan. If I'm not mistaken, one of them is even running for State Supreme Court.

The county Bar association in Seattle marched in one of the holiday parades several years ago. They all wore suits, carried briefcases, and found someone with an old ambulance to run just ahead of them. They would take turns running up toward the ambulance and throwing business cards at it.

What you're seeing is everyone's desire to win the lottery, and the lawyers willingness to help in that endeavor, for 1/3 of the take. Getting rid of contingent fees would make the problem evaporate, but it would also shut some worthy but poor victims out of the system. Seems like the solution might be a much more stringent look at the merits of the case early in the process, such that the lawyer would be on the hook if judge dismissed it as "frivolous" at a preliminary hearing. But the trial lawyers have a very powerful lobby, and insurance companies are eager to settle because they make so much money that they can pay out some losses, so the status quo continues.

Mike,
Do you find it odd that if GM makes a defective car, someone gets hurt of killed, GM recalls the car and fixes the problem?

A drug company makes a drug that kills or injures a few people, they don't recall the drug or fix the problem. Instead, DO WE CHEATEM AND HOW goes after the drug company. Does that seem right?

Know what I think would be a great lawyer commercial?

"Did a lawyer promise to sue and win for you, but lost and then you still had to pay? Well, we will sue your lawyer and win for you".

They are every where!! I think there are just TOO many of them and they have to think of something off the wall in hope to get business to stay afloat. We have two here that come on the T.V. and I swear they look like they just came from Woodstock. There is NO WAY I would hire ANYONE that looked like that. I wouldnt be able to take them serious!!

Calling a tv lawyer would be like calling the Reverend Peter Popoff program and giving him a donation. He will send you some special water and your checks for anything you want will start rolling in. Must be true because he is on Trinity Broadcasting Network and has been on for years.

Should have added "used with blatant disregard for the originator". I will keep checking the mail for court dates !

As explained to me by a lawyer: The advertising lawyer gets his client, the accident victim, to sign a paper authorizing the lawyer to represent the victim in his case. The lawyer has already rejected all victims who don't have an open and shut case. Lawyer does not investigate the case, just calls the insurance company and asks how much they will settle for. After some to none haggling the lawyer and the insurance company settle for and amount less than the case is really worth. The lawyer takes his fee and the client gets a too small judgement and the insurance company saves money. I assume the insurance companies know what is going on and in effect are part of the scam.

(quoted from post at 14:19:08 10/12/14) But the trial lawyers have a very powerful lobby, and insurance companies are eager to settle because they make so much money that they can pay out some losses, so the status quo continues.

That's not true. The insurance companies handle it case by case. If they can settle for less than it's going to cost if they take it to trial then they will. It's simply good business even if some crook is going to get money from it. They have to pay a legal team no matter if they win or lose. They know that most often the person suing, even if they loose and are ordered to pay the insurance company's legal fees, will not be able to pay. Insurance companies most often hire very good lawyers. It's far too often cheaper to pay out 100K in a settlement than it is to go to court. That's one of the reasons insurance companies seldom pursue fraud for under a 1000 or so. It's cheaper to deny the claim and leave it be than have to have lawyers show up at a criminal court to provide testimony.

My take of it isn't "Of the people, for the people, by the people".
It's Of the Lawyers, for the Lawyers, by the Lawyers.

One day I opened a Dallas TX. yellow pages phone book. And
taking the number of listings on one page x the number of pages
of lawyer listings I came up with 5,000. Dallas is a city of
somewhere around a million folks.

What gets me isn't what's right and wrong, it's defend the client
regardless. Dress down your opponent. Don't talk about facts
and the truth. Make your opponent or their support
questionable in the eyes of the jury.

And that's the rest of the problem.....the jury selection process.
"Of your peers"..............my foot. What they want is a bunch of
sheep. I've been passed over in the jury selection process more
than once because I'm not a sheep. I'm the goat that leads the
sheep into the stock trailer headed for the slaughter house and I
sneak out while they continue to make their circle till all are
loaded and the gate is closed.

An then there isn't a set fee, he is on the take from day one and
he charges what he feels like. I know because a couple of times
my kids had problems and I tried to tie the lawyers down, like
your car when it goes to the repair shop.....service rendered,
defined, set fee. No way Jose. I have no use for them and go out
of my way to stay off the beaten path.

Law and order? JUSTICE?????????????sheeeeeeeeee.

Oh and one thing I learned from the judge presiding over the
jury selection process. The subject of what constitutes a criminal
offense. His answer was "anything that has time or money
associated with the offense". So all you "good folks" that get
your traffic tickets and think you are above the law, you are just
"criminals". I didn't say so, the presiding judge on the case said
so.

Thank goodness I'm over the age and deaf and don't have to
serve any longer.

What gets me about our "criminal justice system" is that we are
supposed to have the finest in the world................That's scary.

My opinion, (1st amendment protected) and My 2c.

seems like there on all the time, did hear one state or some outfit got after them for something.

Most of the lawyers who advertise do not actually handle the case. They simply refer the client to another lawyer, who gives them a cut of every referral. It's a fairly efficient system, since these tend to be low-profit cases and there's no way an individual lawyer could afford the cost of advertising when they're only making a few grand on each case.

Here in Michigan, we have Sam Bernstein and Joumana Kayrouz. Kayrouz's face is EVERYWHERE; supposedly her annual advertising budget is over 4 million. She is a bonafide rags-to-riches story.

I know someone going through a divoice. her
lawyer is worthless. has lost paper work three
or four times. Missed two filing dated. Went to
court without the papers the judge asked for.
The judge asked the lawyer what she was
charging her client. The lawyer said $300hr.
The judge told her she was not worth it!

Her exhusband is worth over 1 million. so far
she has gotten $800 a month alimony. And misc
property. A garden hose and a screwdriver.

She has told her lawyer she wants $2500 a month
and her lawyer kepts telling her no.

We think her lawyer is afraid of the exhusband.

Is this one of them rrlund? LOL

Question, what do you call the one empty seat on a bus full of lawyers as it plunges over a 500 foot cliff?

Answer, :a crying shame".

Hey, don't blame me, I didn't go to law school until AFTER I FIRST had a REAL LIFE as a farmer, electrical engineer, tractor truck implement and RV dealer. I saw many young kids come into law school pretty decent but by the time they left there were cocky arrogant smart a$$ better then thou jacka$$es lol

They used to NOT advertise but some brought action under freedom of speech grounds and then the floodgates opened. Too many young hungry lawyers chasing too few lawsuits so they had to resort to TV advertising to make a living. I'm glad I never had (nor now) to do it for a living..........

Regardless of ones chosen profession, like all, there are good and bad out there ITS TRUE ACROSS THE BOARD I've yet to see ANY professions that didn't have their bad apples, even doctors and farmers and auto mechanics and teachers and laborers......

John T Just an old Country Lawyer and proud of it, took a lot of hard work and dedication like any other profession and education is something they cant take away from you..........Likewise Yall should be proud of your chosen professions

I remember an episode of green acres when Lisa advertised and Oliver had to quit his practice or be disbarred.

Sure they have been sued and so has the drug companies. Then GM recalls and fixes the problem. I've taken drugs that have made me very sick. Do drug companies recall and fix the problem? Don't think so. Is the FDA in the pockets of the drug companies? Does the FDA really look after people like they should, or do they say the drug does more good than harm?

There are countless times side effects from drugs that harm people. Very few recalls. I definately think lawyers may be the only way to battle big drug co.
Chattanooga man paralyzed after getting flu nnalert

Its sort of like drugs the dealers are only giving the public what they want and so are ambulance chasing lawyers.Everyone wants something for nothing these days.

"A drug company makes a drug that kills or injures a few people, they don't recall the drug or fix the problem."

Where did you come up with that? If a drug is defective it is always recalled or pulled off the market.

Allan lost your e mail , do you still need an IH D282 found a good one.. e mail me if intrested

How many times have your heard a commercial that states all the side effects form taking a drug, yet the drug isn't recalled, isn't fixed.

A friend almost died from taking a hepatitis nnalert. The nnalert wasn't recalled. They just call it a side effect.

However a drug company did made a med that killed people many people. They operated under the FDA's radar. They were finally shut down. Lawyers went after a bankrupt company. People should have gone to jail.

I feel fewer people have to be injured in cars before something is done to fix the problem. When it comes to meds, most of the time it's brushed off as a side effect. You may change your mind if you ever have to experience what I went through. I took the only drug for histoplasmosis, it put me down hard. No recalls there.

That's the one. Is it him or his brother who's running tor Supreme Court?
Of course then there's their sister. The one who plays the part of the girl on Hardcore Pawn.

We use the letters 'FDA' like it means something.
Check it out, 'FDA' members are also 'officers' on the boards of big nnalert companies. > Now isn't that a conflict of interest ??

I found the OFF button, haven't had the TV on in
over 4 years. Now if I could just find a way of
getting rid of ALL the Ads on this computer. LOL!

Three friends went out fishing; a Salesman, a Plumber, and a Lawyer. While they are fishing a large wave capsizes the boat, and sharks attack and devour the Salesman and the Plumber. A short while later the Lawyer is rescued, and they ask him why the sharks didn't bother him. Lawyer answers - "I'm a Lawyer.....professional courtesy."

My doctor told me that virtually all drugs are a form of poison, it is only the dosage that keeps it from killing you. And all will have side effects, as some folks are more sensitive to various compounds.

My Dr never told me that virtually all drugs are a form of poison, but I can believe it. All my Dr want to do is push drugs.

I must be a very sensitive guy, it seems I have all the side effects to drugs and them some. Before I will take anything I google it.

So why does GM have to recall when they make a mistake and the drug companies can knowingly sell a poison that can virtually kill you?

Ya. Is he the one running though? I'd heard one of them is. I don't watch all that much local TV and if they're running commercials here,I haven't seen them.

There is a scum sucker out of Houston. Named Sokolov I believe that is how you spell it. He will sue anyone for anything. I think he would even sue his own mother.

That's not even funny, we had a lawyer up here about 15 years ago did sue his own mother. Over something stupid too. She hired a decent attorney and beat him. When she passed a couple of years ago he was outraged that she had given everything to his siblings before she passed. He thought he would get his "fair share" of her estate.

Attorney in Columbia Mo has a million dollar office right on the corner of a busy intersection. They have a digital, lighted billboard that runs continuiously showing the $$$ amount of their big awards. It might say, "Semi-truck crash, injured victum wins $750,000", etc.
