Paint removal???

My Cub has its serial tag and starter ID tag painted over. What is the best way to get the paint off without taking the factory print off (if it's still there)?

Here is a pic of what is painted over.

I believe the original paint is already under some newer paint. I have used just some paint remover and a course rag. It will take some care and a lot of rubbing but it will come off. They used to sell paint remover pads for small jobs like yours but I am not sure if they are still available. Check with you auto store or paint store.

I started with the Goof Off but then realized that I may take the original stuff off too. I guess there isn't any other way than to be real careful when using the chemical remover. Thanks!

I'm sure to catch some guff ...soak it with acetone mixed 50/50 with ATF over night - then straight acetone on a rag or cloth, rubbing gently. Be sure to wear protective gloves as acetone is not good for you.

You can heat the tag with a heat gun to soften the paint, and then scrape with a paint scraper (not a screwdriver, they are hardened). If the paint is still fresh, rubbing alcohol or denatured alcohol may also work.

I would mask that tag off and the adjoining area and apply a thick lye gravy. Let it sit a spell and hose off flushing the area with a good bit of water.

Lye + cornstarch + water = Lye gravy

Goof off will attack the 'fresh' paint first because it is (depending on date of application)soft. The paint on the decal will be hard as stone. Worth a try somewhere else just to see. How about the plate on the generator ? HTH

If you inadvertently remove the original paint on serial # plate there are decals thAt make then look new on farmallcub dot com

What I would do is look in my Antique Power Mag for the place that makes the repops and order one. Then I would remove the original so that I don't damage the new paint, and clean it up so that I could get the number from it.
