After I ran the truck a second time, it drained most of the coolant out of the reservoir. Yesterday when I drove it to the auction and back, the gauge only went as high as 212 and back down to about 195. My guess is that I still had some air in the intake and it is now as full as it should be.
I had been losing coolant and after I changed the intake gaskets, I discovered that the coolant line that is back by the distributor was leaking. The plastic seals had deteriorated. $10 part and I am good to go now.
Also. the plastic around the temp gauge sending unit is broken. The two metal prongs still go in to the female connector, and so it still works.
Thank you all
