MM multi use baler/combine-pics

Anybody seen one of these? First one for me, at the Temple Texas show last weekend. The basic self propelled power unit can have a baler or a combine attached. I never saw an engine like it either, a V4 offset sort of...

Seen many, the first U-Ni Harverstors used the V4 engine, the components in the engine are from the model R tractor.

Probably a good investment for a small farm. This part of Texas had very few MM tractors or equipment, no local dealer, so I never saw much MM stuff. I remember seeing one new G1000 in 1965 on a cotton farm. This guy said it was about 2 grand cheaper than the JD 4020 that was showing up all over the county.

I don't recall any of the Uni-Harvestors around my neck of the woods in south Indiana till MM sold the concept to New-Idea, There were a farmer aboot 30 years ago that had one, with grain head and corn picker attachment.
They were available with grain head, corn picker, baler, enslige chopper, and a manure spreader attachment.

Sorry if the photos are upside down at off a iPad that makes pics look upside down like phone photos but had this one running last year and ran in parade have corn head and grain head. bob

My 97 year old Dad in north central Illinois, who just passed away last July, had one of the early Uni-Farmer Systems without Power Steering. He had the Combine that he used mostly with pickup head for windrowed oats until he started raising soybeans then went to direct cut. Also had the Picker and Picker-Sheller. However he was a frugal man and to save money, he switched the corn head from picker to sheller as needed, was an all day job to make the switch. Also for a couple years he had the Uni-Windrower for it as well. Then traded all for an IH 403 with Grainhead and 4 Row Cornhead. Again before Quicktach heads and the switch would also take nearly a day from one to the other. John in AZ

Fore runner of the New Idea Uni. I had a New Idea. Had a husking bed, sheller and combine for it.

My dad has told me about the MM uni-harvester that they had when he was young. He said that it was a rare event when they could run all day without experiencing a break-down of some kind! As others have noted, New Idea took over this machine and they built them in Coldwater, OH up until about 1990. They were modernized over the years of course with diesel engines, cabs, rear-wheel assist, etc.

Many years back, my dad took one of those things in on trade for a new Case 600 Case combine. Back then, we drove the new Case combines from our dealership to our customers. One of them traded in one of those thimgs. I was in my early teens back then and driving a new combine to a customer was a big deal to me. Dad took in one of those monstrosities. I took us about 3 hours on the road to deliver the new Case 600 combine. It took 2 days to drive the MM Uni home. It's top speed was about 5mph. and even at that speed it was difficult to keep it headed in any direction, and we ran out of gas before we got home and had to park it for the night along the road. No one wanter to buy it and Dad finaly scrapped it out.

There was one sitting in a grove a few miles from here until ten years ago or so. I didn't know what it was till I looked it up. Saw a couple in various threshing shows since then.

I used to use one of the second generation ones that used blocks and heads like on a 445 with a sheller, picker and an early combine. Have had several including one of the early ones with an engine based on the ZA blocks & heads with no power steering. Also have a model 760 Uni Balor that is mounted on a cart to be used behind a regular tractor. Story I remember is MM had built more of them for the Uni than they were selling so they mounted them on the cart and sold them that way.
