Tractor Crossbow

Wrenched my shoulder out last year working on a tractor and after a year with doctors, surgery, etc have considerable pain when pulling on anything. Can no longer pull my bow and looking for recommendations on a good crossbow. Pricing doesn't seem to mean much since I have seen brands I'd think decent ranging from $300 to $3000. If a good one comes in around the $300 mark, I'd sure hate to spend $1000 based on salesman's speach.

I bought my dad a barnett jackal for a retirement present. Its fairly fast 330fps I believe and comes with scope and bolts/arrows and quiver. He has shot a buck with it. It was $235 on sale when I bought it....

I bought a C5 Barnet Wildcat. It came with a scope. i believe it was $300. I have taken several deer with it.

I've had a Ten Point (HXL)? with the Acu-Draw crank system. Absolutely love it. Even though they don't recommend it, I use the Acu-Draw system to disarm it while in the stand. Arming a bow with out the crank still requires some pulling. This is the fifth year I've hunted with mine. I've taken a deer the previous 4 years.

Off the topic, but after taking a course in guerilla warfare in the Marine Corps, I always thought a cross bow would be the ultimate guerilla weapon.

You could sneak around at night and create all manner of mayhem without giving your position away.

Ten Point is the worlds best. Same people make Wicked Ridge and they are somewhat less expensive. Dont be fooled into buying a cheap bow as they lose accuracy very quickly

I have been using a Barnett Quad 300 for over a decade now and have killed many a deer with it. Has a scope with 5 lines in it. Top line is 10 yards and bottom 50 yards. Back when I got it it was top of the line and cost me $500 from Bass Pro shop

I spend a lot of time around disabled archers who use crossbows. When I first started guiding 12 yrs ago most shot Hortons. Now anyone who gets a new one seems to be buying a Ten Point.

I would suggest going to an archery store that has a selection and a range. Start shooting different ones and see which ones stand out to you.

The pricing can have something to do with the optics package and how you draw the bow. Some have built in cranks you use to draw the string back, others you draw by hand or have to buy extra equipment to draw it.

One thing that will surprise you is how loud they are when you shoot. Most really crack. Any that have a good draw weight to them, will be a beast to pullback the string on unaided.

If you plan on hunting with one, don't be fooled by their accuracy on the range. You can target shoot them easily to 50+ yds. In the field a deer can jump the string at 20-25 yds.

Wicked ridge crossbows are made by ten point and are more affordable. I got a new one last week for the same reasons you mentioned. So far it has been awesome. right out of the box it was right on at 20 30 and 40 yards I can nail a softball at 50. If your shoulder is real bad look into using a crank draw instead of the cocking rope. the crank has 5 lbs of resistance and makes it real easy. I still use the rope cocking device but I may switch to a crank so my kids can us it as well in the future.
