A friend has a 2002 madza. Auto zone scanned computer and said something is wrong with mass air flow sensor. So I looked for an air leak and checked air filter. Filter looked new. When I removed air filter I found the rubber air hose going from the mass air sensor to the air intake was rotten, cracked in half. So Bubba recommended using duct tape. I said, lets use metal duct tape instead. Metal duct tape to the rescue. It worked. Bet the rubber air hose is a dealer item only. Car is working fine now. Bubba said if it were his car he wouldn't buy a new part as long as duct tape works.

Did you clean the MAS fine wires (platinum I believe). If there is dirt on them it will also run like apcray. HTH

No, I had no cleaner. The duct tape seemed to work. Person made it back to Ohio, car ran just fine.

Before the duct tape, car ran rough in gear and would run normal in neutral. Come to find out when in gear, engine would rock backwards increasing the opening in cracked hose. In neutral the crack would close.

I told person to go to madza dealer and get a new part.

Finding a broken bellows is easily missed I remember my first catch it allotted me for quite some time... It was on a T-bird 2.3 turbo that would stumble on acceleration the bellows would momentarily open up...

Good Catch...

I had the same thing on a minivan a while back. No issues but it was throwing a "lean" code. Since the dealer caught it I let them fix it (I was looking into the duct tape idea too). The new hose was about $160. If I had been thinking I would have checked out a "cold air" intake with the fancy aircleaner on the end instead of the stock replacement.
