Hey you Pennsylvania Guys

I have a couple of days to spend in Harrisburg area while I am at the KILE. I spent today driving through the Amish in the Lancaster area. Being a draft horse enthusiest that was a blast. There was a lot of field work being done with mostly Belgians. Itwas a thrill to watch them work their horses.

I am thinking the Cival War museum tomorrow but still looking for something else or something my wife might like...shopping.

Thanks for any ideas - Bob

If Civil War history interests you, Gettysburg is 40 minutes South on US 15. There is an outlet mall there too to satisfy the shopping urge. Plenty of touristy shops downtown as well. I have not been to the Civil War museum in Harrisburg yet, but it is highly recommended by people I know.

Enjoy your time in the neighborhood,

Kirk

If you wanted to drive to Northeast PA we have the Lackawanna coal mine tour and the National Steamtown Historic site. [Steam Locomotives].

You could stop in Berks county at Bethel,Pa. and visit the Assemblies of Yahweh if you are interested in the "TRUE" name of the almighty.

Gettysburg would be high on my list. We went a few years ago. Staring out over that open field toward Cemetery Ridge, you grasp the folly of Picket's charge. Hope to go again someday.

if interested in the war of nothern aggregation there are lots of surrender sites in Va.

Your wife might like the Chocolate Museum in Hershey, but it might not be worth a side trip. Usually visiting it is part of going to the amusement park there.

Thanks for the replies guys. Several good ideas there.

By the way, although there were some belgian/mule crosses, there were mostly pure belgians where we were at. The Amish were harvesting corn. It was a real treat watching those broke horses.

If you have any interest on old cars and parts, there is Fall Carlisle Collector Car Meet, Corral and Auction in Carlisle Pa. Oct l to 5th. I went Thurday , 150 acres of cars , parts etc. Carlisle is about 30 minutes west of Harrisburg.

Gettysburg is a must, and if you have time, Antietam just to the south a few miles. There is also a great deal of shopping areas just east of Lancaster, and the railroad museum at Strasburg, across the road from the Strasburg Railroad. And, Eisenhower's farm not far from Gettysburg. Whole bunches of stuff to do.

If you go to the Eisenhower farm, be sure to tour the barns. The farthest one is chock full of New Idea equipment. Ike's partner was on the Board of Avco.

Do you like motorsports? World of Outlaws vs Pa Posse Sprint Cars tonight at Williams Grove Speedway just south of Harrisburg. They got rained out last night right after time trials. If you have never seen sprint cars, they are wicked fast. 900+ hp in a 1300lb car!

Kinda the same erie feeling about the rebs chances of survival when you are on Little Round Top looking over the top of those cannon stationed there. The incredible bravery of the men marching into that.

If you have any ineterest in Spencer rifles, there is a shop in Gettyburg who has dozens of them from pristine to smashed up battlefield relics. The proprietor told me he will travel anywhere in the world to buy a spencer rifle. Can't rmember the name of the store of course, but it's right in the middle of town not too far from the bus tour place.

Now thats my kinda horses! I never go on vacation without National Speedway Directory and National Dragstrip Directory. Nothing like the slideways circus.
