plowing question

Ok im plowing with a Ford 151 4x18 plow and i can't get it to leave the open furrow smooth on the bottom so then the next pass is rough riding. I've tried everything i can think of. Anyone have any suggestions?

Is that a semi mount plow?

If so---

Does it have a gauge wheel or is he tail wheel the gauge wheel?

I never did like to plow with a semi mount without a gauge wheel.

Another thought, have you got good shares on it?

Is the tire aired up good enough? Are you trying to plow real dry ground?

Allan

The shares seem good to me but are showing some wear. I haven't checked the tire pressure but they are still round. I will check them in the morning if its not raining.

The ground has been pretty dry but we got .4" on Tuesday, today it dried enough that it wasn't greasy ontop

I am curious how bumpy the bottom of the furrow is. It seems it would have to be really bumpy to affect the ride of a tractor pulling hard. Is the field rough? If so perhaps the gauge wheel is transferring the field roughness to the bottom of the furrow. My JD F145 4 x 16 works real good without the gauge wheel.
I have seen what seems to be like chipping out of the bottom of the furrow. I attributed it to my being at a depth that is chiseling the hardpan. But the chipping did not affect the ride of the tractor. Enjoy the pictures. Paul

Great comment by Todd. Also check for side to side level, e.g. adjust your lift arms properly.

Do you have a manual for this plow? If not check ebay. I have manuals for my F145 plows.

I purchased a JD 4200 rollover plow this spring. I found the proper adjustment to be counter intuitive to what the manual called for. Once I got a manual and got it adjusted correctly it plowed like a dream in all respects.

Take those stops out of the tail wheel and let the gauge wheel carry the down pull.

The rear coulter may need adjustment too. As you are looking forward at the rear bottom standing in the furrow the coulter should be 3/4 to 1 inch left of the share/moldboard edge to leave a clean furrow wall. At least that is what helped mine anyway. If set to the right too far the bottom will allow the wall to crumble and fall in. Worth a look.

haven't plowed much in years but setting it up level side to side /end to end and setting wheel spacings to get line of pull centered are all key to successful plowing
