Spark Plugs, Can Anyone Translate?

Hi all, well, I have been working away on my 1935 JD B, and the head will be going back on it pretty soon, but here is the question, spark plugs...

When we got the tractor, it had several ( I think 7) spare plugs with it, and two in it, they are ALL Champion W12's.

Sooo, I cleaned all of them up, and only one makes a NICE clean, crisp blue spark. I just finished building brand new solid core lines, and that didn't help at all, except for looks... :)

So, should I try to buy some new Champion W12's, or is there something else that you guys recommend? I remember a while back there was a very good discussion about spark plugs, and I learned a lot that day, the only thing I didn't learn was to WRITE everything down for future reference! I learned that today!! :) let me know what you guys think! Thanks, Bryce

Bryce! you are not kind to yourself! we all fail to write stuff down at times. That is like, not putting tools back immediately, after using them. Now that stuff, can be blamed on somebody else,( that darned boy of mine, or Dad, or uncle so and so.) LOL

Go ahead and ask my dad about the tools, I bet you'll never guess who the first KID he mentions is. ;) hehehe

The older Unstyled B's (like yours) used the 7/8 plugs and while Autolite 3076 was near the factory original heat range, I much prefer the hotter deep reach side wire electrode 3077 plug.

The later tractors used 18 mm such as Autolite 386 or hotter 388 or the 3116 which is a non resistor plug.

Well, I called the local Auto House, and he couldn't come up with AutoLite 3077's, period.

He crossed it however, and came up with Champion 589 W89D's. He said that they are basically the same plug, and that it is going to have the long electrode, and he thought that it was an "old school" plug... :) No duh! Goin in a 35 JD! :O

So, I have two of these on the way:

The first thing is to find anything but a Champion. They are an old brand, and a well known brand, and ought to be as good as any other, but in my experience they are the only plugs I have had turn out bad right out of the box. If it was once I'd say it was a fluke, but a couple of times and I won't buy one unless there is absolutely no other brand available.
