Hydraulic Dump

My son is dying to add the dump feature to our '05 TH 6x4 Gator but at about $800 I am in no hurry.

Wandering the isles of my local TSC this morning I saw (but did not price) a large selection of Hydraulic cylinders.

As a teen in a metal shop the guys built their own log splitter so I am wondering if it would be possible (& easy & cheap) to add Hydraulic dumping to a Gator.

If there is a Red Green episode on the subject then a link to that would be fine too :).

I have seen some Red Green inspired dump trailers. They used a hand crank winch on the front of dump bed to pick it up.

As for me, I have a 4010 kaw mule. My bed dumps, but it only to give me access to motor. I thought about a dumping system, but decided it wasn't worth it because if something screws up with dump, I couldn't get to motor.

You may think about putting a strong mat or plywood with a chain attached in bed before you fill it up. Back up to a tree, put chain around tree and pull forward. When I just had a 16 ft implement trailer, I would put a log chain down in the middle of trailer, cover trailer with tree branches. Attach chain to a tree and all the branches would slide out of trainer when I pulled forward.

Then connect chain to trailer and pull it out of the pile of branches. I did it for years before got a dump trailer.

Yes I think the factory version is electric but was thinking hydraulic might more of a DYI project as just the parts from Deere (and all the internet sellers I see I ) is pushing $800.

Problem with the Gator manual dump is that when empty if seems to be like lifting 75 lbs. so neither my son nor wife can dump it.

Would be nice to load it and send someone to drive off and dump it.

Shouldn't be too difficult. Might look at a factory set up, see how they did it. hydraulic would be easy, especially if it would gravity return, only need a single acting cylinder.

Go on Ebay, look around, but do your homework! Need to know lift weight required, taking in consideration the angle of the cylinder to the pivot point, the speed of the cylinder based on the displacement of the cylinder and pump. 12v hydraulic units are plentiful.

Make a manual lever to multiply the force for dumping. 75 pounds with a lever advantage would be like 25 pounds, and cheap. Kind of like this for outboard motors. I had one for my 85 hp evenrude , worked great.

Yes this is true for Gator's with factory electric dumping. You have to crawl under and pull a pin from one end of the cylinder if the machine won't start.

The log splitters I have used had a gas engine.
So it might be possible to almost drop in an electric self contained unit or do I need to assemble the parts?

If you find a good inexpensive way to do this let me know.
We have three Gators with dump beds - linear actuators. They are so handy, almost as much as a loader tractor or forklift.

I have an old AMT with a electric / hydraulic but it is trashed. I would like to get it going again.

I agree, the $800-$1000 they want for the kit is crazy.

Deere actually has one, Manual Lift Assist, but he some on youTube said it wasn't very robust. The gas cylinder didn't last ??

Is this what you meand by a 12V hydraulic unit?
