Ford 501 sickle bar

I am working on my FIL's ford 501 sickle bar mower, I bought a kit to change over to screws and nuts The kit came with a double cutter section 1 small blade and a full size one made as one piece. There is nothing like that on this bar but he may of made due with what he had at the time. My question is should I use it and if so where does it go I haven't looked it over close enough to see a hole pattern that matches. Thanks for any help.

That type of section goes out at the end of the bar and they help a lot to keep that end from clogging up. End as in the end as far from the tractor as it gets. I use them on all my sickle bar mowers

As Rich said, way out at the end of the bar, last section to be put on. Without it most sickles will gather a wad of vegetation at the end. Bit of a nuisance.

flembo,

You'll probably notice that the "section and a half" has three holes in it. Typically, only two of the holes will align with holes in the backer bar that the section knives attach to. That's okay. I have multiple blades with that knife on the end of the bar.

Also, did you get a whole set of high-arch hold down clips? You can't use the standard hold downs with the bolts and nuts.

One last thing, on the inner end of the bar, where the shoe attaches to the bar, I think that you have to use at least some rivets. I don't think there is any such thing as a high arch for the first six or eight inches of the bar.

Did you also consider replacing the ledger plates? They are expensive, but can be worth it.

Good luck with your project.

Far end piece, helps prevent clogging with the extra small blade. However it can hit trees, fence, etc as it will stick out farther than the guard....

I did get 7 high arch hold downs there were 7 hold downs on it before so assumed the 7th one went on the first 6 or 8 inches the kit came with some longer screws I assumed went on that end as well. Ok are ledger plates what I thought were called Rock guards, I was wondering about changing them to. I had an awfull time getting some of those off because my FIL used regular bolts instead of the correct ones it was hard to get a wrench on the head of the bolts. I am sure I will get this done with your help and everyone elses here. I will let you know how things are going and probably have more questions. Thanks Don
