pto log splitter

They made some mechanical screw type, but they were really dangerous. We have a 3-point splitter, but it runs off the tractor engine mounted hydraulic pump.

I made my own. Mounted a hydraulic tank and pump on the splitter and run the pump with a short shaft off the PTO to a pulley on the splitter which was belted to the pump.

Only problem was, I had to run dual belts because of slippage on the pulley at the pump. I have a photo of it somewhere. I'll post it if I can find it.

I used an old transmission in Reverse to get proper speed from an idling tractor, worked great but was cumbersome

Here it is. After these photos were taken, I had to go bigger on the drive pulley and go to dual pulleys to get rid of slippage at the pump. The pulleys need to be sized like that to get the pump to turn fast enough.

It would be perfect with a 1000 rpm PTO.

Nice job if you built it. I always wondered about using something other than I beam . Looks like that tube is holding up.

I've had this one for probably 20 years. It's an "American" brand, has a PTO pump that slides directly onto the PTO shaft with a torque arm that slides over the hitch bar.

It's a beast, and it's been absolutely trouble free, all I've ever done is replace the suction hose, and that was due to a stupid attack on my part.

Just mount a 5hp gasoline engine with a two stage pump and be done with it. You will use a LOT less fuel.

I have an American vertical splitter and love it. Bought it 10 years ago used for $500. Has a big Prince PTO pump and easy to swap from tractor to tractor. Never skipped a beat. Much more convenient then a self-powered unit. I can drive to where the big trees are and split on-site. Works nice for stuff so big you can't move until split. Fuel use is not an issue if used on a smaller tractor. If you stick it on a 100 horse diesel and let the engine run near idle - yeah, it will be a fuel hog.

Just got mine trucked to northern Michigan from NY. It was one of my "keepers."

I have one, mounted on the old Nuffield, runs of the tractor hydraulics. It is a vertical unit, makes it easy to split those big pieces. I bought it about 25 years ago from a man near Shakespear Ont.,who at that time built farm equipment.

John,

You're first picture, wasnt that posted the other day on here by who was hauling your equipment??

Rick

i'll second the putting a gas engine and a 2 stage pump on it,....the pto splitters are pretty slow

I took an old F10 Farmhand loader and made this one. The cylinder, valve, and wedge is all that I purchased. I did modify the wedge. New seals in the PTO pump and a couple hoses.

We use this splitter coupled into the HYDRAULICS of my Case 610B which has the CASE 188 engine complete with hydraulic pump from a CASE 600 Combine. PSI set at 2100 psi. This unit is not about economics or speed. My father closing in on 90 operates the control valve. I have yet to install the three point hitch points. We split dry beetle killed pine, 20" diam. and up to 24" in length with plenty of knots.
Bob.
