How much is a '38 JD BO worth?

On April 11, 1938, it was worth $1120, with rubber tires and a UA 616 Disc Harrow. My great-grandpa traded in a Fordson tractor and a disc harrow for $175, leaving a balance due of $945. It was bought from Salem Feed and Produce, in Salem, Illinois, and was to be delivered "now". The receipt is marked "Paid 4-11-38" and signed by R.F. Gragg. The purchaser was Steuben Wham (my great grandpa) from Cartter, Illinois.

I hesitate to post this picture of the receipt, because it is hard to read. The copies were real thin so the carbon paper would make an imprint, and when I scanned it, the warranty writing on the back side showed through. But if you look close. . .

The other picture is the actual tractor, taken sometime in the early 40's, with my Dad at the wheel.

That is fantastic. Thanks for showing the class! You should find a way to best store that paper so it's preserved.

That is a great picture. It shows the BO earning its keep back in the old days. Take good care of that picture. clint

I think the tractor itself is worth from $2000 to $6000, depending on condition. However, if that were my tractor and it had been bought new by my great grandfather, it would be priceless, unless I had no choice but to sell it.

Thanks for posting that it is great to see and read stories like that.
I have the actual not my Dad signed in 1948 for a B Farmall and machinery when he started farming. As posted priceless

Harv, I'd love to own that tractor, but Mom & Dad sold it in about 1954. I remember that they drove it on a truck that looked way too small to haul it.

I no longer have the original receipt. I gave it to my older brother. He is 16 years older than me, and spent many hours on that seat. I thought he should have the receipt. My brother hired out to plow in the neighborhood, and had so much work that he rigged up a set of headlights and a generator off of an old Plymouth so he could work it after dark. Here's a picture with the Plymouth headlights. Two of my brothers on the right, and our neighbor with his nearly new Ford tractor.
