Impala Ignition Switch Recall

Regarding PJH's post last week about the ignition switch - Just today I received GM recall 14350 to replace said switch. My 2002 has also been having intermittent problems with the A/C, cruise, and overhead display. Dealer will not have parts until Oct 1.
PJHs Post a week ago

I got the same letter on my 2006 Impala about a week ago.It said they would contact me when they had parts to do work.

We had a 2004 Impala. The ignition switch was replaced 3 times, out of my pocket. After the third time, we traded it off. Now, we are hearing about the ignition switch recalls. Go figure! My mother-in-law has a 2008 Impala and she also got a recall notice. The letter says to remove everything from the ignition key, ever the remote lock/start fob.

Thanks for the news about your recall notification.

I did some searching on the GM Recall Center, and they had a recall for her '03 Impala - recall # N140350. I was disappointed to see that the Repair Description for this recall stated: "Dealers are to install two key rings and key cover on all ignition keys free of charge".

That's not gonna fix my wife's problem. We've discovered that we can flip the key to the "start" position, usually once or twice, and the AC and cruise will both run. (It's against my upbringing to twist to the "start" position with the engine running, but the starter does NOT engage) I'm hesitant to tackle changing the switch myself. I've heard horror stories about passkey problems after a switch change, so I'm going to have my son do it for me. He has flashing capabilities at his shop.

Unless I completely misunderstood the service guy at the dealership, the "switch" isnt the problem all these vehicles are being recalled for, its the lock section of the part the key goes into thats the problem. So is the actual switch part of the key assembly now? Wife Buick is part of the recall, but our other Buick isnt, nor is my truck yet....

i work at GM dealership.

the recall is stupid. All we are doing is making the key hole opening for the key ring smaller so you can't put 8000 keys on the key and cause it to shut car off. trying to fix stupid.

Wife had a 97 Buick that had intermittent issues where, if I remember right, it'd shut off and then she'd have to restart. Could've been other issues. I don't exactly remember anymore. She also had tons of "stuff"on her key chain.

I drove it with the spare set and never had troubles, then I drove it with her set and got the issue myself. Told her to loose the extras and that fixed the issue.

It seems to me, that the problem isn"t so much the actual mechanics of the switch, but the way it"s clocked in the column. And simply turning the cylinder so that the key is vertical while in "run", would solve all problems.

a chevy tec on another site was none too happy that the dealership had orders from GM to use the available parts to repair any unsold new cars before doing any customers cars. He thought cars already on the road should get the repair first.

I think all auto manufactures are the same. Sister in law traded her 2 year old Chevy because of recalls and bought a Ford thinking she would get away from recalls and the first time she took it in for servicing they told her they needed for the the day because they had just got two recalls on that model. She was not a happy camper.

I'm laughing at the fix for this problem, but sometimes you have to fix the person/driver and not the car.

Oh, another thing I don't understand is why people get aggravated about recalls. Many timeswhen a recall is issued and repairs are made outside of warranty period. Whether its a safety recall or another type of recall, just be glad you are getting a free repair on an item that is known to fail or possibly fail. You always have the option to not have the recall done, fix it yourself or pay to have it fixed.

No responsibility on the drivers to not run off road, to not hit curbs, to not be drunk, to not put 50 lbs of keys on ring,,

Boy, its a messed up world.

I work in a GM dealer also. luv2wrench said it best!!

Well, on the other hand, WHY does an engineer designing a switch to do a specific job need to take into account the MORONS who hand 27 pounds of crap off of the key?

And why/when did this become the norm/necessary?

That being said, Jeep must have a pretty good shystem 'cuz SWMBO has one and has at least 27 pounds of jingling crap hanging off of the key and it ain't died/shut down/killed her (yet)!
