Laptop hardware problem

I have a Toshiba Satellite L745-S4210
The battery will not charge.
The computer will work if you leave it plugged in so the chargers working.
When you first plug it in the battery symbol on the bottom of the screen will show the cord is plugged in and it is charging as the white lines fill the battery then goes empty again.
After about 4 or 5 times of the lines filling the battery symbol it just goes empty and stops charging.

Any ideas on what to check and how to check it?

No I have not tried anything yet.
It just started doing this yesterday.

I am not really one that just throws parts at something hoping it will work but for the price of a battery; the fact that it is the original battery; and no knowledge on how to test the battery; I should try that.

Leaving them plugged in all the time kills a battery more quickly.
If a new battery works, unplug it once a week or so and let it run
on battery at least until it starts warning you about a low battery,
then plug it in and charge it back up.

Hopefully this doesn't rain on your parade too much. But my daughters Dell was doing things similar to yours so we got a new battery not knowing any better. Well come to find out it was in the circuit (mother) board and the new battery didn't make any difference still had to keep it plugged in. She got a new laptop for her last year of college. Good Luck

That's about how long the battery in my Sony vaio laptop lasted. Sony battery was going to be about $200, so I did some searching and found a non sony replacement with 3 times the capacity for about $80. Had to re-flash the BIOS so that a non sony battery wouldcwork, but new battery came with disk to do that.

The batteries usually only last 3-4 years, best case. I cycle mine every day, charge it all the way up, then drain it all the way down. This tends to get me the 3-4 years. I have friends that do not do this, and they are lucky to get 1-2 years on them.

Also remember hard disks are lucky to run 3-4 years, so if the computer is older, just as well replace it.

John,
I have the same laptop for the kids. If I recall, Toshiba released updated software to change the charging, but that didnt help mine.

New battery is the next thing suggested.
