Mag resistance .. snaps good-good spark now BUT ....

Been working on my Farmall A mag .. I had to file the points .. lots of "metal" left on points .. polished up all connections ..
I noticed after I put it back together and turning it to see if the "snap" had fire .. it turned harder than I remember before ..
It does have SPARK .. good spark !!
Doesn't seem to have anything wrong with it but noticed turning mag with my fingers it seemed hard .. it "snaps" good .. and has good spark now ..
My question is ... is this normal .. not sure how to describe the torque pressure .. but maybe 25 - 30 lbs [just a guess] .. hard to do with thumb and one finger ..
Thanks ..

The tighter the spring (more energy it stores from winding), the faster it makes the rotor spin when its released,,,,,,,,,and the faster the rotor spins the more spark energy. If it snaps with a faint dull clunk that's a weak spring but if its a loud sharp SNAP that's better.

My opinion: you don't drees the points in a mag. They are of a higher grade than standard auto points. The only thing that should pass through a mags points is a clean bis card or one dipped in thinner followed by a clean card ,leaving no paper fibres. If they look like they need filing replace with magneto points.

If it was turning free before you opened it up, my guess is the armature-[very strong magnet] picked up some trash/filings & is dragging--otherwise dry bushing/bearing

You didn't happen to clamp it in a vise did you ?
You can distort the housing if you did.

all the ones I have had apart are like that. you really have to try to turn them with a thumb and finger. I would be more concerned if it spun easy.(not enough impulse)

.. when I cleaned the mag ... I forgot to mark the position.. butI polished up all connections .. I noticed after I put it back together the pressure stroke on #1 cylinder that the rotor now pointed to the postion where #3 was so I put #1 plug wire there .. and then clockwise went with the firing order.. 1 3 4 2
Got a REAlly GREAT spark now!!! But haven"t tried it yet .. hoping it will work . Gary

the pressure winding the spring is normal, it is compressing the impulse spring. If you turn it in the opposite direction it will not build the pressure, which also is normal. As to filing the points, they have a plating on them to reduce burning. Once you file through that they will burn quicker, so I suggest replacing them and the condenser.
