relative borrow something but not return it? I need to paint the milk house for the annual inspection, and my brother borrowed the paint sprayer and never brought it back. It was just a cheap Campbell. The funny thing is he came by today and my dad asked him about it, he said yeah I have it. It's right here in the truck and pulled it out and showed it to him.
I wasn't there, so I asked the old guy did you put it in the shed. Dad said no, he got done gabbing, put it back in his truck and left.
I said "what?"
Dad, I guess he didn't want me to have it!
Me, I guess not! LOL
I can't complain to much about him, he works various construction jobs for a guy and brings us free guard rail. Not stolen either. lol

I live about 600 miles from any relative.I do however, have neighbors that have pulled that kind of thing. Now,I just say no.

1. Loaned a boat to a guy that had it so long, his wife got it in their divorce.

2. Loaned a hay spear to gentleman that kept it so long, it ended up in his estate sale. I bid on it for a while, but it just went to high.

3. My most recent. Loaned a set of stirrups, and fenders to a "friend". They were brand new, off of a saddle I was waiting for one of my kids to grow in to. He had a saddle, with no stirrups. I called him the other day, he sold his saddle, and all. Now I can't match the tooling on this saddle any where. It was an ammerman roping saddle. Evidently they no longer do black inlay.

Thought about it but thinking of putting in parlor in another building and a new milk house. Once a year isn't bad! lol

Quite a few years ago, due to 'non-returns' or broken stuff. I initiated a loan policy; Nothing sharp or with a motor.

When my new neighbor moved in across the road,he borrowed alot of stuff. Wheel loader, skidsteer & such. Always came back better than it left.Kept wanting him to borrow my combine, guess he didn't need it.

noticed my york rake was missing, thought for sure the scrappers stole it,,,,sure was glad to look down into the next farm in the bottom of the hill and see it hooked to my neighbors tractor,I Dont have a harrow,I borrow his.I try to only borrow things that dont break easy.,he is a good mechanic,he can borrow anything I Have,i dont mind.

One BIL I can't lend anything to. Last time I did I picked my FIL up and had him with me when I confronted him about it. FIL was there when he borrowed it in the first place. Got my stuff back and now won't give him the time of day.

Was always happy to loan stuff to my neighbor Charley, he would return it in better shape than he got it. Came home one time, and he had my baler spread over a half acre. Seems that the bull gear had broke a tooth, so he called another old machinist friend, and they made a new tooth with weld, and shaped it with a grinder. Also cut a new keyway so the gear would hit the power stroke on a different spot. He was all smiles- "That's the most fun two old guys have had in awhile!"

Had an arrangement where I loaned my equipment trailer to another friend twice a year- in spring he would go get his father-in-law's tractor, in fall he'd take it back. One year he brought it back a couple weeks late- Apologized, and said "It was getting kind of scruffy, so I sanded it down and painted it."

Another neighbor's baler jumped time and destroyed itself late in the haying season- he asked to borrow mine. I had one field left to bale- deal was, he would bale the rest of my hay first, then finish his own. All went well, and he brought it back all cleaned up and oiled up, and ready to put away for the winter.

The next spring, I had a need for a backhoe, and asked to borrow his- he said, "I don't loan out my equipment- sorry." Needless to say, from that point on, neither did I, at least to him.

They usually get the operator with mine as well. When you know the quirks of each machine I don't want someone else using it. Not that they would intentionally mistreat it, but I know what it needs by now. The neighbor often wants my straight truck. I just drive it because it is missing the accelerator pump jet and takes off funny when it gets hot with a heavy load. Better me driving than have them winding her up and riding the clutch. Also won't loan out something I will need within the next couple weeks or earns the majority of the money (the JD 8430 for example).
