I was wondering what something on the order of a late 1980's Navistar single axle, equipped with a 466, and approximately 400 bushel box was going for?

These parts IF it has AIR BRAKES will still sell good like $ 2 thousand to 2500 but hydraulic brakes will be cheap.

I will buy all you can find in good shape for $2000. Around here they are more like 5 - 7000. I have an 1989 Ford single axle with air brakes I have turned down $6000 for. I have seen some for sale for 8 to 9000, but I don't know if they sold for that.

I agree with Mike - they are higher than a cat's back. Around here you would pay $7000 for that. I've thought of getting another but prices have kept me from it.

I just yesterday sold a 1982 Ford 8000 10 wheeler for $3000. It had 6 new tires and a good 22' omaha dump bed. I did need a steering box and a clutch but it didn't slip. It had a good 3208 Cat and 10 speed tranny. I've had it for sale for over 2 years. Around here if it don't bend in the middle and hold 1000 bu it's a hard sell.

I wish I had an answer.

I had a 1978(I think the last year before the S-series) Fleetstar 2010A, DT466, for ten years, approx. 1990-2000. Then I found a 1990 8100 air ride tandem w/Cummins L10 far enough south it was clean. I switched the box myself, but needed a heavier hoist. It cost $4000 back in 2000-2001!

For a few years I have been thinking about something different, or additional. Straight trucks, boxes, and hoist prices are ridiculous. I had just about made up my mind to find a cheap single axle tractor, and buy a single hopper trailer. But that would mean a class A license and physical. Enough time has passed, the mill where I have gone for years is slowing way down, I've got neighbors with tractor trailers, and I'm thinking I'll live with what I've got.

Why not buy an old road tractor for a little of nothing and then find a box and hoist for it. You can buy a new Dakota Aluminum box for about 10,000 that would have a Shurlock tarp and top swing tailgate. That is more than you would have in the truck.
Should be able to find good used tractors around the MI,OH,IN,IL area for less than 10,000.
