My landlord was right. HE never got to see his farm again!!!

He passed away Monday. He did not make it two weeks after he called me. Hate that he is gone. He was a great man. A good friend for many a year.

His wife and daughter came down today. They asked me to meet them at the farm. They wanted some of the dirt to take back an bury with him in WI. I gladly helped them. I included some Black berry roots as he loved wild black berries.

His wife invited me to his services. They will be next week as he wanted to be cremated. Plus his one son is over seas working and it is taking him a while to get home.

The daughter got me to the side and talked a little about the future of the farm. She wants things to stay the same other than she wants to refurbish the house some so they can use it as a weekend retreat. I told her I would help in any way I could.

The wife and daughter want to come back down in several weeks to go over what they want to do to the house an also look over the farm. They have his pictures, records and notes about the farm. (Some of which I would like some copies of. He took a bunch of pictures over the years of the different crops and harvest)

Just hearing them talk, it seems like the daughter will control the farm. They are structuring it so she will have a controlling interest even after the wife passes.

Hope all goes well for you in the farm going on the way it has been for years.

The mention of the family getting some soil to bury him with and also the blackberry roots that you furnished was what we did when my dad died. We got soil from one of his farms, some soybean seed, corn, and wheat and put them in small glass bottles that would seal and put them in his casket. Had never heard of any one doing this until now.

We have iris from my moms family grave in masonville planted on this farm ever year when there in bloom i take some to my aunts grave but i know better than take a thistle she might come out after it!

JD Seller,
There is a time to be born. Time to die. Each day is a blessing form God.

If I'm lucky I won't spend my last days in a hospital or nursing home rotting. I've seen many who weren't so lucky.

Sorry to hear of your landlord.
I recently told my wife and daughter that I want to go back home and get some water out of the old well for a keep sake before mom and dad are gone an the place is sold or the well is closed in. I started collecting soil samples from where & when I went on vacation but I lost them when I moved. Would love to do that again.

So sorry to hear of his passing, but I would not be so sure he did not make it back. None of us knows what REALLY happens to us when we pass. I like to think that if you are out on the farm and you think of him, then he is there in spirit.

Glad to hear the farm will continue. Best wishes.

Well at least they have some sense. I have been trying to convince my parents that the 3 kids all trying to agree on decisions involving real estate is a bad idea....

You had a good landlord. How far away do the daughter and wife live? Is anyone living in the house now? It sounds like he passed his good sense along to his children. You're lucky there.

I'm sorry you lost your friend.

All the best. Randall

Randal: They live about 150 miles away.

The house is structurally sound and weather tight but it has not been lived in since the early 1980s.

My landlord had a finished room in the bank barn he stayed in. It has a bathroom and a small kitchen area. He did that around 1995.

The house is basically a four room down and four room up house that has been added to all around. I think the plan will be to tear all the additions off and add one big kitchen/family room to the back of the house. What is used from the original house would need all new wiring and plumbing. The exterior is all rock and it is in good shape. He had new windows put in the main house 4-5 years ago.

We will see how it all goes. I will bring my oldest son with me when we do the Planning. He will be taking this farm over from me. This was what my landlord and I both wanted. The daughter and my son are about the same age, 47-48.
