OT at the ketchup plant today

I am working on an expansion at the ketchup plant in Iowa. They are adding a new kitchen, automated paste dump and additional liquid sugar capacity.

It was hot and humid there, will be at the site for the next 5 days, off a week, then back for 2 more weeks.

I does smell good, but do not take a whiff of the worchester cooking, it will open your sinuses right up.

Is that a Heinz plant in Muscatine.
Just curious. I am a ex tomato grower. Use to grow a 110 acres of them every year.
Some years Heinz would haul them from my area clear out there. They did have some contract growers on the west side of Michigan for Muscatine. Seems like a long haul.

Yes, paste killed the tomato growing here. I think paste is sold and shipped at 46 percent solids. That makes it economically feasible to ship long distance.
We got a premium when tomatoes were over 5 percent solids. That paste takes a lot of evaporating to get it that thick.

About 1950 or so Pop grew a field of tomatoes here in the Ozarks. As I look at the area, now , it must have been 3/4 acre or so. I remember we'd go out with a salt shaker and feast. I was 5 or 6. No idea how he harvested them, or where they went.

If you are working in Muscatine, you're in my backyard. E-mail me, maybe we can meet and say howdy. Chris

Its nice to hear someone is adding on to a facility instead of cutting back the business. I guess the country is not ready for Chinese made ketchup.

(quoted from post at 20:55:06 08/21/14) I have my own Ketchup plant in my house. I.E. I do all my own Ketchup any more

OLD, I'm interested in the formula for good homemade ketchup. Sounds like a fun thing to do. Outside of course.

Heinz ketchup plant in Leamington was supposed to be shut down recently . One story is that Leamington had the McDonalds contract until. A former Burger King executive took over the Leamington plant.

Never outside, always in the kitchen. And sure a different tast than the boughten stuff. Have some in basement that is at least 15 years old.

Old I was talking the other day about making some ketchup out of my surplus tomatoes this year. I would be interested in the recipes if you don't care to send them to me also. My email is [email protected] Do you have ketchup recipes or catsup recipes?...lol. I remember being a kid and seeing catsup on bottles in restaurants and grocery stores. It's been many years since I have seen that on a bottle.
