OT suggestions for traveling to St Louis, IA, KS etc.

Planning a trip to Cahokia Indian Mounds near Collinsville, IL. What else is there to see around St. Louis without getting into the Ferguson mess?
Then driving up to to go to Mt Pleasant engine show in Iowa. I would be interested in suggestions in what to see after that. We also hope to get into Kansas, Oklahoma panhandle and Northern Texas
Open to ideas
Thank You

Once you're at Cahokia mounds you'll only be 8 or 9 miles from St. Louis. So there you can see the arch, new Busch Stadium, Bush Brewery, Science Center, St. Louis Zoo which is free, Forest Park has Art Museum (I don't recommend it, I think it's boring) Htistory Museumu, Jewel Box is a giant green house. You also have the Planetarium in Forest park close to the Science center. There is a lot around the zoo which is Forest Park. We were just at the zoo 2 weeks ago. Refreshments there are quite pricey

Drove through St. Louis East bound not long ago. Before the Ferguson thing. I don't think I'll ever do that again. I would avoid that all together unless there is something there you just absolutely want to see. It sucked. Had a new map, and exits were either labeled wrong on the map, or were no longer there, 6 lane traffic & busy, and it was a complete nightmare. And I was just trying to drive through there without stopping. West bound coming back through wasn't bad as far as exits and so forth, but the traffic was still a nightmare. And it wasn't even rush hour either time. Could give you some suggestions on things to do and see, but need to know what your intrests are.

I like Grants Farm too, great for kids but not a bad way to see the Clydesdales. It was free too the last time we were there. When you get up north on US 61 at rt6, 15 miles north of Hannibal stop at the truck stop for a cup of coffee. Trust me. Hannibal has the Mark Twain cave, museums, shopping down town, one great big tourist stop. Then straight north to Mt. Pleasant.

If you get near Kansas City, Mo, see the Arabia Steamship Museum. Very interesting. Amazing that all the cargo survived 130-plus years buried in the mud.

You can tour the Arch [very cool], the Budweiser brewery [also cool, which includes a tour of the Clydesdales stables etc. and a couple cold ones]] and the Soulard farmer"s market all in one cruise down Broadway. Yep, traffic can be bad.

John, Just west of the zoo 10 minutes an eatery named HODAX or Hodak something close to that. Ever eat there? They make chicken good.

Thanks guys for all the suggestions, heading out first light tomorrow.

Maybe our new Ford F 150 can make it that for, its only got 2500 miles on it.

You will pass through St Louis with two choices of interstate on your way to pick up US 61 N at Wentzville Mo.

I 70 West, which uses the new river bridge and goes on the north side of the city out past the airport and past Ferguson, not much to see.

I 64 W takes you across the old a rough Popular Street river bridge, past the Arch were you can snap a few pic's.
The bridge area and around the arch is under construction and a mess. You will spend more time trying to get to the arch that you will for a visit. Your Choice.
Also forest Park, the Zoo, and everything else that was mentioned is off I 64.
The mileage and time between the two routes are very close.
Just a few minutes and miles difference.

When you go to Old Thresher's, you will be very close to the American Gothic house in Eldon. Then if you like very scenic driving, Van Buren county is nice one to drive through.
