Timing mag to engine

I had it out to take it to the shop. Ive gone through wetting 2 sets of plugs, and have bought a third. Im kind of wanting to know what to look for to tell me if I have it wrong.

pull out #1 plug, get it on COMPRESSION on tdc then check to see if the rotor is pointing to #1 plug wire.

Timing procedure for Allis mag fired engines.

pull engine up to TDC #1. Take off the distributor cap (the outer one). There will be a small lug inside the housing of the inner or big cap. Turn the mag backwards till the rotor lines up with the lug. Assemble to the engine and you will be close enough to get running. Then when running tune to order. This is also the proper procedure if you have removed the governor.

Turn engine over to TDC on #1 cyl. TDC mark should be visible on flywheel thru bottom inspection hole. According to my IT manual the mag should click when you do this and the rotor should be in between the #1 and #2 plug wires. (Which on an OEM mag will be 12 O'clock.) The click of the mag sends it pass the #1 plug position. All mags should be marked for #1 position either #1 printed on outside of cap or a raised area/lug on inside housing under cap.

My dad's trick for finding TDC on # 1: Find a cork that will fit in the # 1 spark plug hole with some resistance. Turn the engine with the crank (slowly). When the cork blow out and scares the Bejesus out of you, stop and see where the distributor rotor is.

Compression stroke is when both pushrods [ on that cylinder] have lash. That is the stroke you time on. If the exhaust valve is open you are 180 out to reinstall mag.

There is ABSOLUTLY no number on the outside of the cap, NOR any lug or marking on the inside.

In the bottom inspection rectangle, all I can see is the clutch
