Fall color pics already

Somebody posted a picture the other day of a tree just starting to turn. Here's what it looked like along the edge of a field here in mid Michigan this morning where I was moving bales. The glare doesn't do justice to how bright the reds and purples are already. Might be another LONG winter around here.

I tell ya Randy, I was looking at that all the way up to Traverse City last week along with all the corn just tasseling there. If they get a frost anytime soon it won't be pretty. Been looking at those trees a little closer because there is always a few that do that each year. They always seem to be one particular kind of maple and generally in an area with a lot of standing water or run-off. I have always called them swamp maples and I am thinking that all the wet this year has more of them coloring early. At least that is what I am HOPING is the case because I REALLY don't want to fight another winter like last year!

My niece's high school started classes yesterday. I guess it is late August already.

We are visiting our son in South West Ohio at the end of September so I guess that the fall colours will showing well by the time we arrive.

I've got some good news and some bad news.

The good news is, its not fall yet!

The bad news is, you've got Lithuanian Leaf Blight!

Not seeing much color here. Sumac is still green and it is one of the first to turn. Time to get a couple of bags of rye around.

I was north of Cadillac this afternoon and there are many areas the leaves are turning. In the Fife Lake area many of the lower areas have the maples all red. They have been for about 3 weeks now and I always called them swamp maples. I was talking to a guy from Harrison a week ago and he said they had a light frost already. It was in the upper 30's here at my place last week. Never had to run the furnace in Aug. before but did this year on several days
