2001 S10 4.3V6 hard starting

If i give it a squirt of either or gas it will run. I can drive to town, shut it off, then try to start it 3 seconds later and it will not fire. A squirt of either or gas and then it will run. Some kind of sensor going bad? Low fuel pressure?

Sounds like fuel pressure. Get it checked. Fuel pump is expensive and fun to replace but don't cheap out and get generic pump or will be replacing again within a year. Just went through this last year in My 2000 S-10 4.3.

A classic symptom of a failed TP sensor.
During normal cranking, the PCM operates the injectors to give a rich mixture. If the TP voltage rises, the PCM goes into "clear flood" mode and shuts off the injectors. Seems to match up with your complaint.

Fuel pump. Pressure spec for that engine is 60-66psi. Under 58psi and it won't start without aid, but once running will run fine. Heed the advice below, GM pump only and replace filter. Aftermarket pumps are noisy and fail prone in that application.

Sounds like a fuel pump. We have previously or presently own and run a dozen or more S 10. We just unbolt the bed, unhook the wire connecter and lift the bed away. then the fuel tankis in the open to replace the pump. BE CERTAIN the GROUND on the FRAME is CLEANED and REATTACHED.

Have replaced a couple fuel pumps on S10 Blazers. No fun! Almost impossible to drop tank without breaking at least one fuel line. Can't lift box on this application. Last replacement pump looked like was made in Canada - more careful reading, was DESIGNED IN CANADA ... MADE in CHINA! Not happy, but still running after two years, so may be OK. Think there's a port on the fuel rail where you can check pressures provided by fuel pump, will provide difinitive infro on pump performance. Donno if infro is also available via a shop quality scan tool, might check with competent shop.

There are two pumps on some s-10's, the fuel tank one and on some trucks there is one behind the bumper in the front. Either of those could be bad. Also, pulling the box works on the extended cab and crew cab. Lots easier than dropping the tank. I have two of these trucks, one with the extra fuel pump, one without.

The thing behind the bumper on some S10's is an electric air pump for emmissions. Has nothing to do with starting or fuel pressure.
