Potatoes are finally dug

Over my week off we dug our potatoes. Didn't get nearly as many as we thought. I bet as many as we got at least that many are still in the ground. The digger was not working right, we had to many weeds, rain delayed us, and the hydraulic lever on the Super M broke. Glad they are out but i don't think we will plant this many next year. 10 rows about 100 yards long. The ground was a little to wet. Some of the potatoes would fall off the side instead of going up the chain, then get run over by the wheels and cut them. So all in all we got them out of the ground but I want to look at buying a better digger next year.

First pic is the first 3 rows we dug.
Second is the broken lever. I fixed it by welding. Probably shouldn't have but it worked
Third is where the rows are.
Fourth is the tractor and digger.
Then a few of the digger.
Finally one of me that my brother-in-law took that looks pretty cool.

I've been digging mine for a couple of weeks. I have to do it by hand because of the way my garden lays out. I still have a couple of rows to go. My weeds were bad too. I often uncovered potatoes pulling weeds. Next year i may get a two-row sub-soiler to plant and dig them.

From the looks of the few hills I've dug so far, indications are mine are not going to yield like the last couple of years either. Those taters that fell off the side and got cut up. Are they in good enough shape to can? That may save a lot of them that won't keep in the bin.

All the rain we've had this year makes weeds a problem here, too. Been a real battle to keep them in check.

Last year we had a lot of weeds in the taters and they were real hard digging. This year my wife decided to straw mulch the taters and evidently she has no issues with weeds and very easy digging, Something to consider for next year.

Nice pictures!

Burgh's had a john deere 2 row pull type pto potato digger in the back of the yard that looked pretty easy to rebuild over a winter. It was very wide.

If you were looking for something with a bit more of a price tag, but in really nice shape, I suggest taking a trip out to Lancaster county. I saw some very nice diggers there this past spring.
