senior dog food

Looking to see what others on here feed their older dogs. Blue is 14 year old and I've been feeding him Purina Dog Chow for most of those years, but I think it's way past time to switch him to something that is better suited to his age. To keep this tractor related I included a picture of him and what was to become my 770LP, he was about 6 years old then. Second picture is only recent one I found of him not sleeping.

ProPlan for older dogs. They have puppy, adult, weight management for fatsos like me, and for older dogs although I don't know what they call it exactly. I'm not sure, but ProPlan might be made by Purina as well.

Got down into the 50's last night which made for great sleeping with the windows open. I can see by your picture that it got a bit colder by you last night. Don't rush it.

We have a 13 year old dog that has tooth problems. Dry dog food is too hard to chew. We take a tupperware bowl 1/2 full of potato and salmon(forget the name) dog food from TSC and 1/2 full of water. Let it soak and keep in fridge so it don't spoil. Seems to like it and does well.

Purina has as senior dog chow. I've used it before but I'm not all that sure that the regular isn't fine too.

I'm posting only to say give him a little bit of whatever you are having. Maybe he does already, but my point is at his age especially, what's it gonna hurt? He deserves some of the good stuff. I have to leave the last few bits on my plate for my dog and put his food on top that. It's kinda a thing--last bite to the dog. From chili to fish he just wants what I'm eating and I figure it makes his usual chow smell better as he eats it. Don't forget popcorn or ice cream at night if your having some. Mine gets his ice cream in a coffee mug--that way it takes him awhile to lick it out and he's not finished before I start. :)

Just don't over do it and let him get fat--you can cut a bit off his chow if worried. Enjoy life!

Science Diet is what we feed our older dog. It has glucosamine in it & it seems to help with stiff joints.

We started our Black Lab ( he's also 14 years old) out on Euknuba & Iams lamb & rice and he ate that for years. Then switched him in later years to Purina Dog Chow which he didn't like so we went to Purina Kibbles & Bits which he seems to likeand still eats it. My dog is slowly losing weigh and has been deaf for about four years.

I have a small Beagle - Jack Russel ( 1 1/2 years old) cross that we got from an animal rescue in Indy. They told use to feed him Purina Proplan adult Lamb& Rice and he did not like it. I switched him to Purina Smart Blend Lamb and Rice and he eats that better. I have given him some of the old dogs Kibbles& bits and he goes nuts over it.

He has always been spoiled and given some real food. Like you said, he just wants what I'm having. He has actually lost ten pounds over the past year but still doing well for a dog his age.

I have never had a dog that liked lamb for some reason. I don't know what it is, but for some reason they don't like lamb. I once had a vet tell me as far as best foods go for protein, in order...dry like Purinia, then canned with a milk bone to clean the teeth, then semi-moist like Kibbles and Bits, but semi-moist are higher in sugar, and lastly and best to stay away from generic no name brands either canned or dry. My thoughts on generic though, if it comes to going hungry, and its all that one can afford, best not to go hungry and times are tougher than they should be, so...

I don't like the Dog Foods that have a 'main' ingredient of corn. So many brands do. The first ingredient on the list, is the major ingredient.
Canines are meat eaters ? Chicken first is good. What are thoughts on this.

I'm not a vet, but one of my dogs that is gone now developed a kidney problem, and the vet said that it was due to high protein levels. I fed my dogs a lot of beef, and I'm certain that if my vet back then was correct, that I did him in. Acutally, he lived a happy healthy life for a couple of years after being diagnosed and cured, but wen it came back, it came back with a vengence and I had to do the humane thing and have him put to sleep. While he was sick, the vet had me boiling beef and mixing it with rice to feed him. As dogs become older, I understand that its better to cut back on protein for at least their kidneys.

In any event, much good luck.
