I have a farmall m serial number fbm31383 instead of the normal fbk numbers. Was told it could be British. How do I find out?

May be just mistake on the stamping if this is on the chassis serial plate. Think the British built M didn't start until 1949 and didn't use a serial number like that. If I recall right the serial numbers had a D letter on them.

The problem is that there where alot of the farmall M made. The best part of international harvester is that there where casting dates and years on every castinig part such as (R-1-05)this means Jan-5- 1950. The reason why was because the factory could find the bad defected parts by the casting numbers on the parts. Then they could chase them down and fix the problems. What you need is a good book on casting numbers to define your year and make of your tractor. The book is International tractor Data book.

Hi D Slater, you are correct IH here in the UK built the first British M at the Doncaster works on 13th Sept 1949 with the searial no D1001. It went to Arthur Neales farm in Cambridgeshire. Arthur Neale was IHs UK general manager in the 1930s. The tractor is still owned by the Neale family and in 2009 I put a IH feature on at the Newark tractor show and Peter Neale brought it to exhibit. I also got D1002 the second one built to put at the side of it. MJ
