Ford 600 spark problem

My Ford 600 ran great when I parked it last winter, but now is not getting spark to the plugs. So, changed points and condenser, but still no plug spark. I turned the key on to see if I could get a spark from the points, but nothing. But when I stuck my screwdriver between the cam on the distributor and the points, it sparked and the motor turned over. So I thought the wire from the coil to the distributor was shorting out so I ran a wire directly to the points but still only get the spark when I touch the cam and side of the points? Suggestions?

When that happens to me, which it happens more than I like, I go to the shelf and get a new rotor and cap. If that doesn't fix it, wires are next. I keep spare parts on shelf. It's a common problem with all dist cap ign systems. Even have the same distributor issues with my 2007 GMC truck. That's why most new cars and trucks have gone distributor-less ign. My next truck will definately be distributor-less.

When you lose spark, plugs will get wet. You may pull plugs, spin the enginee over to blow the gas out and replace with new ones. Keep the old ones, let them dry out and reuse next time.

If you are getting spark by putting the screw driver across the points to the cam it shows that current is not going through the points. Clean and reset the points. There may be dirt or corrison on the points keeping them from making contact. When you set them make sure that the wiper pad is on the low side of the cam not the lobe (high side).

It sounds like your points are not opening unless you stick your screwdriver between the cam and the points rubbing block. Is the distributor cam rotating when you spin the starter? If the cam is rotating then I would have to guess the point gap setting is not correct. Attach a voltmeter to the primary wire between the distributor and the coil and see if the voltage is changing when you spin the starter. Spark occurs when the points open and the primary field collapses in the coil.

Common for point right out of the box to have a coating on them that needs to be cleaned off which is likely to be your problem. Take the flap from the box they came in and use it to clean the points. If you do so carefully you should be able to open and close the points by hand and see a spark when they open if no spark they need more cleaning

You have that backwards. Points are closed on the low spot & are gapped on the high spot. If you were to gap them on the low spot, they would never make contact & no spark.

Thanks for the info on the voltage I have a feeling that is where my problem is. The points are clean and set to .025 and the cam is rotating.

emery cloth leaves behind a sand sort of coating that you need to clean off or you will still have no spark. One easy and safe way to check points is to pull the ignition side coil wire off turn it on then touch that wire to the coil where it came off. With the points closed you should get a spark with the points open no spark

Well it was not the points. condenser, or coil. It was a bad ignition switch. It had fire all the way to the coil until I hit the starter, then nothing. Thanks for everyones help.
