Air hose sizing?

I have purchased four air hose spring return reels.
I am planning to purchase replacement air hose and would like to voice my concerns as far as restrictions are concerned.
What's the point of purchasing a 3/8 air hose when the connecting fitting has a 1/4" diameter hole?
It is my thinking that this will not reduce poundage pressure but will effect air volume.
I realize that I could go to 1/2" hose but this will result in a shorter length hose that the reels will accept.
This is no big deal as all my air tools work just fine, just want some opinions.

Try this to help what you want.
Recommended Air Hoses
Approx. Air Consumption
(cfm) Minimal Air Hose Size (inches)
Length of Run
  0'-10' 10'-50' 50'-200'
0-20 5/16 3/8 1/2
20-40 3/8 1/2 1/2
40-75 1/2 1/2 3/4
75-120 3/4 3/4 1
120-140 1 1 1-1/4

The fittings are reduced diameter for only a
fraction of an inch, the hose is forever! It's the
friction of the air going through the line that
slows it down, hence reducing volume. What most of
us did where I worked was have a piece of 1/4 hose
about 5 feet long connected directly to the tool.
This made it a lot more maneuverable and easier to
get into tight spots. The only downside is when
you are dragging the hose around that extra
fitting and quick disconnect may catch on things,
it depends what you are doing with your air tool.

Take a drinking straw and blow through it.
Now cut a piece about 1" and blow through this one.
Notice the difference in the pressure it took to
blow through the full straw?
Same diameter, different length.

The hose from my tank is 1/2" except for the last six feet where I use a 1/4" hose. When I need to use either my 3/4" or 1" air wrench I connect them directly to the 1/2" hose.

Loss of flow volume of liquid or gas through a hose or pipe is called "friction loss". It is a direct function of distance. As Russ and Steve have said the length of 1/4 compared to the length of the hose makes the coupling loss insignificant.
