Cutting a couple patches of 2nd cutting today and saw a mink hop from one field to the other. I was stunned...no river for about a mile, I've got a tiny pond. Too stupid to take a pic with my phone. I assume it was a mink...bout foot and a half long, coal black. Had a red tail hawk nearby for most of the afternoon. Saw it get 1 snake and 3 mice. Usual group of barn swallows over indulging on all of the insects stirred up. Interesting for me.
 
saw a baby mink playing in the road the other day. First time to see a very young mink. Have seen a few adults near or in roads & trapped a couple. Hoping it didn't get run over.
 
We had a very, very large red tailed hawk that would show up when a field was getting cut. Would even land out in the open area.

We always enjoy the wildlife (except the hogs).
 
I've been repairing my drill press motor in my little shop all morning, and I was hearing an odd, and loud, bird call. I stepped out and there were two pileated woodpeckers flying around my yard, landing on my trees. They were identical, so I don't know if the female and male look different, or if they were both males?

They were HUGE, about the size of a mallard duck. They're not uncommon here, I usually see them every summer.

Oh, and I also had a small mink in my swimming hole yesterday.

We as farmers/country people get to see on a daily basis wildlife that the rest of the world doesnt even know exists.Sometimes we even get to interact with them.We are truely blessed.
 
The most interesting I have seen was two coyote's that decided to come check me out when I was cutting hay, they got within two windrows of me before they finally turned away. I now carry while on the tractor, was not fond of two wild coyote's looking at me like that. Last year I did manage to put two skunks thru the haybine, that was not interesting and it did stink....LOL.
