Potato Garden varmints

Discovered this AM that it is indeed voles that are digging and eating the potatoes. The patch is about 15ft x 40ft,so I'm thoroughly soaking the area to drive the voles out. Thanks for the responses.

That's good to know, was wondering, they don't seem to be able to burrow into the soil here, and at times there are plenty of voles, not so many lately, must be soft or loose soil, here it tightens up when it drys, they will move in if you leave a tarp out or something they can get under. I've always grown some potatoes, never had anything get to them, except the beetles on the leaves.

They have a strong sense of smell, you may be able to ward them off with mint extract or something, I actually have a few of them as pets, domesticated just about now, did it to initially learn about them, it sounds weird, but they are something, one thing I know is they love fresh greens and have a keen sense of smell, rarely have they been in the garden, once I was ill and left a tarp over plants for frost and they moved in. I chased them out easily, food for the hawks, owls and coyotes !
